OT -- music to listen to whilst being geeky |
loser 19-09-2002, 12:53 AM just wondering...
what music do people listen to when they are on pressf1?
what music when playing games?
Chris Wilson 19-09-2002, 01:18 AM For about 3 days i've been listening to the cripple Mr Onion 3 song CD, i downloaded and burnt from the bands own site CRIPPLE (http://www.cripple.co.nz)
I also tend to listen to Blythe Power &or Tool.. so there is no particular pattern.
Sam H 19-09-2002, 07:17 AM Well it varies greatly for me, I have a ton of MP3's under various playlists, I'll list the common music I listen to though, Darude, Alice Deejay, Misc. Techno and Trance, Eminem, Tool, System of a Down, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, and lots of others.
Veale 19-09-2002, 08:23 AM Sam H has my kind of music, maybe with a bit of Incubus, Chillis and some good old fashioned punk thrown in! Oh, and most important one being Salmonella Dub! :D
Veale
Well... I dont know if I want to share :) Last time I did that I was mocked :(
U2
Pink
No Doubt
Queen
Madonna
The Offspring
Limp Bizkit
Dido
Gorillaz
Darude
Cranberries
Basement Jaxx
RHCPs
a bit of a range there... heaps more too, but those mainly I guess...
Mike.
Veale 19-09-2002, 08:39 AM No need to mock you Mike! I don't mind any of your music, Offspring are one of my favourites, the only one I will "mock :D" you about is Madonna, I can't understand why ANYBODY likes her ?:|
Veale
> one I will "mock :D" you about is Madonna, I can't
> understand why ANYBODY likes her ?:|
She makes good music. That's the only reason I listen to her... that's the only reason I listen to anybody really - nothing to do with who they are, what they look like etc. (well one or two maybe, but they'll remain nameless in this forum :D)
Mike.
SoniKalien 19-09-2002, 09:32 AM KoRn
System of a down
MetallicA (old stuff - anything after black album is crap)
GnR
Marilyn Manson (I like the music not him)
Puddle of Mudd
American Headcharge
anything thats way too loud and distorted :D
tweak\'e 19-09-2002, 10:08 AM all of the above and a few i didn't know i had ;-)
i usually just randomly play anything in my play list (which is only 2000 or so songs).
everything from AC/DC to elvis, techno to punk rock, country to thrash metal.
Baldy 19-09-2002, 10:09 AM On my computer, I could happily listen to "The Everlasting" by The ManicStreetPreachers played continuously..... but also listen to: Talk Talk - Magazine - Aimee Mann - Joe Walsh - Neil Finn - PinkFloyd - TheBeatles and anything out of Dunedin. Oh, and for a chuckle, Kevin Bloody Wilson "Stick That Fu**in' Phone"
Boring I know, but I'm an old codger
BALDY:-)
Chilling_Silence 19-09-2002, 10:22 AM Is it just me or are most of you computer geeks fully rock/punk freaks too?
I'll listen to almost anything.
I like Hip-Hop and Rap, so stuff like Ja Rule, Ashanti, Eminem, Coldplay areen't too bad either. Nelly's got a few goodies, and so have Creed and POD, loving Youth Of The Nation. Toby Mac, Maybe a little Pink.
I dunno really coz my collections sitting on a HDD down in the garage while I put together a new PC for myself coz my old one died when the motherboard got spiked and so I'm a little stuck for music variety at the moment.
Oh, and for Kiwi Band (Gotta be local man) I'd go with Che Fu. He's pretty good listen.
Cheers

loser 19-09-2002, 10:59 AM >Is it just me or are most of you computer geeks fully rock/punk freaks too?
Fully eh.
I'm the same (kinda). Listen to a wide range of hard rock and heavy metal.
Always on hand are deftones, stabbing westward, megadeth, and incubus.
Also balck sabbath, primus, filter, genesis, queen, fear factory, soad, faith no more.... lots more too but i'm not gonna list my whole cd collection!
A heap of old and new "one hit wonder" songs.... come on eileen, more than a feeling, in the meantime.
That cool new song "tribute" by tenacious d.
Grew out of offspring, limp bizkit turned crap, though i do still love their first album.... metallica have never been my thing.
punk just aint my thing either. too fast, you can never keep in time when playing it (i'm a bass player!!).
my flat mate plays bloody puddle of mudd whenever he gets home, so i've been listening to that too....
Chris Wilson 19-09-2002, 11:08 AM >Is it just me or are most of you computer geeks fully rock/punk freaks too?
I spent the last 24years collecting 1½tons of sound gear, and another ½ton of lighting, no points for guessing what i use it for.. If your ever in CHCH and see a tall man named Chris with dreadlocks down to his butt running between stage and mixing desk, and/or (un)loading trucks @ gigs, say hello, its probably me
Yeah well theres this weird thing, last time i was at a a CMO gig, i got talking to Andy cripple, (an admirable guitarist/frontman, he's a programmer, sits all day writing programs, listening to .mp3s, and when off duty, plays guitar, eats, sleeps), a "fan" joined the conversation, and confided that he was just finishing a programming course.. the conversation went like some i would expect in here. Love of big power noizes, and computers seem to go hand in hand!
Specific songs (apologies to High Fidelity) that should appeal to geeks.
(showing age and something of my taste)
- Computer Games, MiSex
- Video Killed the Radio Stars, The Buggles
- She Blinded Me with Science, Thomas Dolby
- Industrial Disease, Dire Straits
- Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel (cheap shot, other songs of his are way better, but the sledgehammer seems appropriate with computers)

OMG! I am sooo embrassed at my level (4 :8}) I am a Imperial Warrior currently running around doing the "Pilgrim's Path". I think I spend too much time here to make any great progress! :D
Graham Petrie 19-09-2002, 05:24 PM Bruce - track 15 Lagered Four, disc one (from memory)!
Jungle Brothers - Jungle Brothers :-)
I am a fan of a lot of new New Zealand music too.

I hate K-Lee :(

antmannz 19-09-2002, 07:04 PM oh dear ... too much to list, but talking of parodies - we must have just about every South Park parody there is.
And although it's not a parody, my fav would have to be Mr Hanky and Kenny - The Most Offensive Song Ever. You can even play it with ya Granny around, but it's funnier (depending on your sense of humour - mines rather warped) when you know Kenny's words.
Makes me laugh just thinking about it. :^O :^O :^O :^O

Thats real music Poppa.... have you ever listened to that Techno Crap. They used to rubbish Rap music. But at least the Rap musicians were using thier own voices. The tea cosy set today (Techno Heads) think shoving a record on a turntable and playing silly buggers with it is cool and original music. Well its not. Its crap. C - R - A - P
Baldy:-):^O

I'm glad you like it :D
The oxford dictionary defines music as a) an art form consisting of sequences of sounds organised melodically, harmonically and rythmically. or b) any sequence of sounds perceived as pleasing or harmonious.
So there you have it - as music is defined by perception, it is subjective and individualised as to what music is to each person.
I love the thump-thump-thump of techno, the bass beats send shivers up my spine, and the electronic sounds echo inside my head. hip-hop rocks as it has wicked rhythm, and a real pacifica sound (at least most of the stuff I like does).
So, each to their own. I personally think Pink Floyd sucks. I was given one of their albums once (the one with the cool flashing light) - I chucked it in the bin - ha ha :D
Noone will ever agree as to music or any of the arts as they are too subjective, and it is useless to argue. My tastes have changed damatically over the years as my environment has influenced me. i guess that they will change some more as time goes on. I can't really see my self at 50 driving the equivalent of a BMW with tints, lowered and allows/spoiler etc, with four 15" subs in the boot playing crystal method at full volume, but that is kind of what I do now (Minus the BMW etc :))
Interesting thought

dipstick01 19-09-2002, 11:08 PM AHHHHHH the dulcet tones of Pink Floyd ( I sort of remember the concert ) and basically any music they play on Hauraki.
One I'm thrashing at the moment is Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds musical. That is still one of the all time classic sets to wind up loud.
I caught my neigbours listening to it this morning over the fence lol.
I'm also thrashing Midge Marsden ( shameless plug time ) as we have him as a guest streamer on tuesday the 24th at 8pm in NZChat (http://www.nzchat.net.nz) We also might have a few other local New Zealand icons lined up soon too for guest spots. :):):)
loser 19-09-2002, 11:12 PM you love it big boy.
loser 19-09-2002, 11:14 PM a bit of turntables and silly buggers is good...... in HEAVY METAL, not in techno.
Floyd is good.
