It was really the N64 that was owned. Or the Jaguar, or 3D0 or Saturn. X-Box was a completely different generation....

I think it's more for making 3D mainstream and advancing efforts in 3D software in general, not for inventing the concept.

I do remember hearing somewhere that Nintendo had helped sony come up with a base idea for a joint system, but the playstation was born when nintendo wanted to stay with cartridges while sony wanted to move into VCD's (videogame DVD's).
In all actuality, it was nintendo with the first 3D system, If I remember correctly 64 came out before playstation.

You remember incorrectly. Playstation was 1995, N64 was 1996.
