Optical mouse vs. traditional track-ball/corded mouse |
Cmdr RayCav Apr 7th 2005, 8:11pm Simply put, which is better for gaming?
I happen to have both (one each on two computers) and I've noticed drawbacks and advantages for each. The cordless optical mouse for the most part doesn't seem to lag all that much, but I've noticed on some games there are lag and tracking issues big enough to be annoying. The track-ball mouse, on the other hand, for some reason seems to want to be a dirt magnet and I have to clean the damn thing out weekly if I want it to be a better gaming mouse than the optical-tracking mouse, which becomes super-tiring super-pain-in-the-ass super-quick.
So, what are your opinions?
Isil`Zha Apr 7th 2005, 9:39pm An optical mouse, probably standard (with a wire) would be best I'd say. No lag issues, and no random spots of the mouse getting stuck during presicion moments because there's shit on the bars that got stuck to them by the ball. }p
Karamozov Apr 7th 2005, 9:47pm Corded optical here.
I intend to get the MX1000 Logitech Laser (yes, laser) mouse for gaming.
:D
MJ12 Commando Apr 7th 2005, 10:00pm Corded optical here.

:D
Why not get the *phaser* mouse? :)
It'll NDF away your mousepad while you play! :p
dacis2 Apr 7th 2005, 10:10pm I'm using a wireless optical mouse. no problems as of yet.

That damn thing put a hole in my desk. :(
Sindai Apr 7th 2005, 10:21pm I use a (cheap HP) corded optical mouse, and find it to be perfectly responsive and precise or so close to it I can't detect any flaws.
Peacekeeper Apr 7th 2005, 11:08pm get a stark optical mouse!
My wireless Intellimouse Explorer with a leather back and MX-1000 Laser haven't given me any problems. No lag or precision issues on either mouse.

Regardless of whether the thread is on the right board or not RayCav, it's up to the Mods to decide that, not you. Do not presume to tell us what's on the right board or not.
I keep telling you this, but you don't seem to be listening, so I'll say it again - You're not a Mod. Stop acting like one.

PuGGerCheese Apr 8th 2005, 1:40am I have a cheapy corded optical mouse. Wireless is the devil, in my experience. I'm pretty sure the Logitech MX range are el neato (from what I've read), but don't buy a cheap wireless. They're horrible!
Citrakite Apr 8th 2005, 1:41am Had a corded optical but damn if I remember what happened to it. Track ball worked fine on my games but I use a PS1 controller since I hate using the keyboard in a game.
Shinova Apr 8th 2005, 2:03am MX510, corded and optical. 5.8 megapixels/sec, 800 dpi, with something like 10+ Gs or something, blahblahblah, anyhow it's regarded widely as the best gaming mouse.
But I use a MX700. Practically just as good, and for those of you people with awkward desk spaces.
dacis2 Apr 8th 2005, 2:18am my Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse costed me a hundred plus bucks. I hope it was worth it.
Shimrod Apr 8th 2005, 2:33am I'm using a wireless optical mouse. no problems as of yet.
In that case, you haven’t had it for very long. Just wait untill you need to change batteries while in a firefight. You’ll be throwing it across the room by then ;)
dacis2 Apr 8th 2005, 2:45am hah, true
but its been going fine for a few months now, I'd better get ready to change the batts.
Shinova Apr 8th 2005, 2:46am Unless it's got a charging station, then just plop it in every night.
E1701 Apr 8th 2005, 4:44am Corded optical, here. Just a cheapo mini-mouse designed for laptops. The only problem I've had with it is that once in a rare while, something with it causes a glitch that sends the cursor zipping across the screen... which is a bitch when trying to snip someone in Joint Ops. :p It hasn't happened recently though, and I'm starting to think it was intereference from the track-stick and touch pad while playing.
pecenipicek Apr 8th 2005, 5:06am i've got meself a wireless optical Dexxa mouse, not sure what model..
the thing eats batteries as if they were made of thin air, but then again, i do charge em twice during the day :p
meh...
300dpi, no lag, responsive just enough for me, not too fast, which is cool, gives me an additional precision(well, for 50 bucks its quite good)
and i've had it for two years now, and it works like a charm...
only it looks like i've put it on roast damnit...
Nonite Apr 8th 2005, 5:13am Logitech SBF69... Very good... but it's sticky. Maybe I ought to wash it sometime. Any suggestion, on how to wash a optic mouse?

I get that too.. it'll often end up with me spinning around at several thousand RPM. It's interesting to watch from afar in CS:S. :p
pecenipicek Apr 8th 2005, 5:34am oh yeah, anyone have a problem with dust getting on the lower part of the mouse?
not on the lenses themselves, but those parts on which the mouse moves?
it makes that weird *crunch* sound..
Got Logitech Cordless mouseman Optical.
Its a bit heavy with the batteries, but a good mouse still. Needs a certain type of surface or the cursor will go zooming to some corner of the screen all of a sudden sometimes. I intend to buy logitech MX 1000 sometime, altough I would prefer giving it a try first.
Had a cheap logitech corldess desktop express mouse and it was the worst cordless mouse I have ever used. It was constantly losing connection and shutting itself down when the batteries were halfway spent. Arghhh. Lost a few Dawn of War ladder games because of that shitty thing.
Dragannia Apr 8th 2005, 6:08am Corded optical here. And I've found it to be FAR superior in all respects to track and ball, and even my sister's cordless.

If the buildup is that big, you should just be able to scrape it off.
Major Diarrhia Apr 8th 2005, 7:44am I had the Wireless Intelimouse Explorere but I had to change the rechargable batteries I baught for it every two weeks or so, it got anoying. Then the MX 700 which was great because of the recharging station but I found it a little imprecise and didn't work well on certain surfaces, but it worked fine on most. Now I have the MX 1000, it's the best one yet, even though I think its shape would be better if closer to the MX700. Other than that it has pixle level precision, finaly, and a base station, plus it never seems to run out of its charge, it also has an off switch I just found on the bottom.
kv1at3485 Apr 8th 2005, 8:28am Wireless optical here.
Just be sure to get some rechargable batteries if it doesn't come with a recharge station.

Good Lord, I just put that up there so everyone would immediately understand that it's about gaming, not strictly a hardware issue. At this point I really am becomming sick and tired of being nagged like this at every corner, especially by you.
And was even making a post about it in this thread even necessary? You of all people tend to be the one big on sending PMs to people. Why couldn't you just send a PM to me?

use optical mouses with a cord...

Same. Great mouse.
Bester Apr 8th 2005, 9:57am i have the Intelliemouse 4.0 too. Silver
Its awesome, the extra buttons are nice.
I like hte scroll wheel out of games, but ingame, its too sensitive and because its smooth (doesnt snap into place) then usually weapon selections jsut whizz by, especially annoying in CSS

Not anymore -- Logitech just rolled out the new MX518, with selectable 200 to 1600 DPI. This allows you to adjust mouse sensitivity on the fly, which is just *great* for FPS games -- you can go to low sensitivity for precision sniping, then flip to max for close combat and such.
I'm debating between the 518 and the MX1000...I'll probably get the 1000, though, as I really *HATE* corded mice.
Shinova Apr 8th 2005, 2:34pm 1600 DPI? Wow, talk about really catering to gamers. :p
Shimrod Apr 8th 2005, 3:35pm http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Shimrod/MyMouse.jpg
My mouse. Quite sufficient and there are only 2 problems I've had with it. First the on/off button broke, so it eats batteries awfully fast. Second, the lid that covers the batteries broke as well, luckily the batteries stay in place.
justifier Apr 8th 2005, 8:00pm A microsoft wired optical mouse, and I love it. I had a tracked mouse before and I hated it. It seemed like no matter what I did that damn ball kept getting hung up, and it didn't have a scroll button, which is damn near required for some games.
Lord Azrael Apr 8th 2005, 8:06pm Same thing as Vault, however my mouse went crazy and kept acting as if it was being disconnected from the USB port and reconnected. Very bad when gaming.
Got a new one, differant brand but havn't noticed much differance.
Karamozov Apr 8th 2005, 8:14pm I've heard nothing but good things about the MX-1000, so that is the route I want to go.
Otherwise, for $30 from Thinkgeek the Auravision Optical corded mouse is pretty good. And the wheel glows blue!!!!
Shinova Apr 8th 2005, 8:22pm I heard many people have a pick-up lag with the mx1000, or some of them have that problem where the cursor jumps to the top of the screen suddenly for no apparent reason.
The pick up lag is where if you pick you mouse up then set it back down, the sensor doesn't seem to register the new movement until like a split second later.
Some of the MX1000s have those problems, some don't.
I don't know. It might be a good thing to not get that and get a MX700 instead, maybe. Up to you.
wyldstallionryder Apr 8th 2005, 10:16pm The MX1000 also has an improved button layout over the older MX700, including a tilt-wheel for sideways scrolling.

I had something similar to this before I hooked it up through the serial port or upgraded the system software for it. What would happen is that it would randomly zip to the very bottom of the screen but it never happens now. I never have pickup lag it self though.
Dragannia Apr 9th 2005, 12:22am A bit off topic, my mouse keeps actinup, ie sometimes it just stops and I have to disconnect and reconect it. Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Agammemnon Apr 9th 2005, 12:25am Duct Tape.
dacis2 Apr 9th 2005, 12:44am ya know, mine doesn't even HAVE an on-off button.
