Star Trek: Birth of the Federation, anyone? |
So, who's your favorite race, favorite minor race to control, favorite strategies, any "other" entities that you've met (Gomtuu, Borg Cube, Combat Drone)? Any questions on the game?
My favorite race is the Cardassians, and my favorite strategy is from the start to build massive amounts of Destroyer IIs. They're fast, tough, and a real great strategy is to charge, then harry on the next turn. I've had multiple fights where I've destroyed enemy capital ship groups in equal numbers with just destroyers. They're pretty cheap, are fast (2 sectors per turn, IIRC), can fire in any arc (making harry a deadly manuver) and you can amass a large fleet with a lot of firepower quickly.
My favorite minor race to control are the ones with ships. The Tamarians, Sheliak, Yridians, etc.. I've only seen a Bajoran fighter once, but I don't think I'll try to get them as they're so damn rebellious and I play as Cardassians.
For the other entities, the Borg Cube always ruins my day, the Edo Guardian just sits there, the Chrystalline Entity is pretty weak, the Combat Drone is deadly and if you fight it, fight it first with a large and powerful fleet and knock it out for good. I've faced Gomtuu (fires that wave that destroys your ships) but I just leave it alone. I haven't faced the Callamarian, the Tallermanian ships (that'll wreck systems in one move) or the Husnock raider.
Just a question: how do I get more credits per turn as I'm getting a huge fleet and cover up the maintenance costs?
Oh, and can someone tell me how to load the cheat codes?

There's a savegame editor out there if you wanna cheat :p
Q`res Oct 1st 2005, 3:06pm I like playing as the Federation mostly, either them or the Romulans. I don't really care for playing the Cardassians or the Klingons... their styles just don't suit me very well.
As for minors, I like the Andorians and the other minor race with the ship training facility (Ullians I think). I can keep a steady flow of Heavy Cruisers, Heavy Destroyers, and Destroyers with decent crews pumping out of the shipyards that way.
Major Diarrhia Oct 1st 2005, 3:35pm There is a fan project Birth of the Federation 2 that I used to have a lot of interest in.

I like(as much as one could like anything in that horrible, rotten, shitty game) playing as the Cardassians, but the Romulans are the most powerful race. I build one or two sets of 9 destroyers for raiding, and a couple sets of 9 heavy cruisers for the borg. (I think it only takes around 7 advanced Heavy Cruisers to destroy a cube in the opening attack. It's brokenly easy.) After that I just start to bomb everyone else out of the game, and replace whatever losses I take in the process.
Conquest isn't worth the effort. Neither the game, really.
Big Steve Oct 1st 2005, 7:58pm BOTF is better if you get the ship editor. I always up shield and hull strength and reduce firepower, plus ship cost and maintainance, so that the powers can afford bigger fleets. I also make starbases fucking bitches to defeat, like they should be. Hull and shield strength in the thousands.
Instead of a 20 ship v. 20 ship engagement being a "big" engagement, I usually had much bigger. My record, IIRC, was setting a sixty-something UFP fleet up against a 100+ ship Cardie fleet. I won, since I had larger numbers of heavy ships and more experienced crews.
Major Diarrhia Oct 1st 2005, 8:21pm Would it be possible to make it so you could have 1,000 or so ships?
I just got the editor, and it's pretty sweet, especially when giving the Seliak a large fleet and just going around hunting it down.
And yes, the money editor is useful, too.
Mellian Oct 2nd 2005, 6:30pm game editors for BOTF? Wow, maybe i'll consider playign again just for that. :p
