9800XT vs. FX6800LE |
Twisted Mentat Apr 7th 2005, 2:37am I'm looking for a new video card since my GeForce 4 MX hit its limit awhile ago and only now am I bothering to fix it.
I've given myself a budget of $600 NZ and these are the ones closest to it.
I've looked for reviews and have only been able to find ones for the 9800XT. So I ask the SB gaming community. Which one is better? The 9800XT with 256MB VRAM or the FX6800LE with 128MB of VRAM?

I myself have a 9800SE , which is a crappy version of the XT, basically i love it but really do think i shoulda gone wif something that carries 256 VRAM minimum.
Basically radeon are awsome, sorta like the AMD of the gpu world but things like updating drivers are a lil harder than with nvidia units simply because the nvidia guys have the detonator which has allll drivers in 1 and the ATI guys have soem random(ish) website ot get ur specific drivers off.
Its really a minor thing but still a pain in the ass for the lazy ppl like myself ;)
Go ATI!
PuGGerCheese Apr 7th 2005, 3:31am It's a very random website.
www.ati.com
Random indeed. :p
Personally, I love my 9800Pro, but the 6600GT seems like a much better purchase nowadays..
About 6 or 7 months ago I got the BFG (overclocked) 128Mb 6800LE and it is very nice, but since it was that long ago it costed about $300 USD.
The 6600GT was not out yet for AGP so I decided to get the 6800LE for my B-Day.
But I also sugest the getting the 6600GT is as good as the LE for alot less.

Man i must be inhaling some funy shit }p
ATI rocks ;)
Tetsuo Apr 8th 2005, 12:35am Unless ATI is going to be making cards that have Shader 3.0 and HDR lighting support, I'm not sure they will be having my business any longer.
It's kinda silly to say that though, seeing as how Unreal Engine 3 and Source will be using these special effects. Not like ATI is going to let nVIDIA get one up on them for long.
pecenipicek Apr 8th 2005, 5:37am i have a nvidia fx5700, which has 2.0 pixel shaders declared on the box, yet nowhere in the games i get to use 2.0, so im stuck with 1.1 which looks like crap...
GO nVIDIA
CommissionerJan Apr 8th 2005, 5:48am Basic experiences: Avaoid nVidia's LE cards, avoid ATI's SE cards.
They generally designate reduced capability versions or are just older chips running at higher clock rates.
I myself have had a GF Ti 4200 for years, and it was damn good. Now I have a Radeon 9600XT, and it's damn good too.
I won't say shit like 'nVidia sucks' or 'ATI sucks', both don't. . ..try to find a website that is independent and lists both cards' features, or maybe even has benchmarks of both. . .
Yeah I know that wasn't really helpful, but it's the best advice I have :/
That Commander Apr 10th 2005, 5:18am Bah, get yourself a 3DFX card :D
*ahem, they went out years ago*
What!? Voodoo2 12mb accelerator addon card isn't the latest thing going around? :p
Anyway, as far as I know, ATI took over the 3DFX company and that's why their cards are so good.
No, nVidia absorbed it.
Fun Fact: SLI was 3dFX's idea.

Arrgh, had my facts wrong :(
However I knew that, the good old 12mb accelerator in my computer had support for that -- if I could find another one!

Bit of a waste of time, I had two Voodoo2s, exact same make running with SLI and I didn;t notice a blind bit of difference
Q`res Apr 11th 2005, 11:41am No, nVidia absorbed it.
Fun Fact: SLI was 3dFX's idea.
Fun Fact: Other than the name nVidia's SLI doesn't share anything with it's 3Dfx predecessor.
Also, Vypr, I find that odd... Voodoo 2's couldn't run games at 1024x768 except in SLI.

It probably benefitted from the extra ram more than anything.
Denix Linelli Apr 11th 2005, 6:23pm Fun Fact: Other than the name nVidia's SLI doesn't share anything with it's 3Dfx predecessor.
Fun Fact: It isn't even the same name, only the same acronym. 3Dfx SLI means ScanLine Interleaving, nVidia SLI means Scalable Link Interface.

So it is your contention that the 9800Pro is a superior product to the 6600GT?
