Freehand mx corrupted files

Recently my mac went down due to electrical power failiure (the back up system didn't work!) and after resarting it the freehand mx file i was working on didn't open. It sends this message: "could not complete your request because this file is not a frehand valid document". Does anyone knows how to recover these files and how to prevent this to happen again?
