Weel mail should be as fast a Thunderbird at retreiving IMAP mail. So, how big is your mail box ? Could you also tell us what Mac OS you are using ?
One thing you can try is to go lower the MTU value for your built-in ethernet in the Ethernet tab through the Network System Pref pane. Lower it to something like 1400 and see what it does.
Idealy do close Mail first, change the value, then startup Mail again and see if the speed is changed.

I am using 10.4.2 and the stnadard mail app. My mailbox is very small, less than 100 messages with no large attachments.
Tried changing the MTU but it made no difference.

gherkin,
You can setup a free trial imap .mac account. This would give you, with a few minutes effort, a reference to judge your other imap account against.
(use port 587 for the outgoing mail server setting in mail.app).
FWIW, I was working yesterday with 10.4.2, mail.app, and an imap server on the internet and it worked well.
Good luck.

Mail.app is brutally slow since moving to tiger. I have a .mac account w/ about 200 mb on it. It feels like I'm having all the same issues that I had w/ mail.app in 0S X.1: Takes forever to send mail w/ attachments, it takes forever for read mail to become un-read mail etc... Also takes forever to get simple one line messages. I'm downloading thunderbird right now to see if the problem is on the server.

Try different settings in the preferences like "download everything" or "download nothing" to see if there's any difference. Sync the IMAP account and check if this procedure takes different times under different preferences.
R.
There used to be an issue with the firewall and mail. Try turning off your firewall and see if the mail problem persists.

Its size that counts. .mac started giving me more storage, so naturally I started to use it. It really doesn't work well, and I just store the bulk of my old mail on my local machine. I don't really think it is just an imap thing, b/c thunderbird works great. Only trouble is, no addressbook... Oh well...

I have experienced the same behaviour. A moderately big IMAP account (GMX in Germany, approx. 220MB on it in 10 folders), which works very well with Thunderbird and is slow as molasses with Mail.app (10.4.2).
Any more ideas why this is the case? Or does noone use IMAP?
