Interesting article, thanks for posting it. I don't think there is anything readily available for the Mac.
It would be easy to load a small Mac email program on a USB flash drive. There are many small email programs that will fit. Having the program automatically store the email on the USB flash drive is one potential problem. Having it automatically store your account settings and passwords on the flash drive is another. Someone writing an email program could probably incorporate these features fairly easily, but someone using one would likely have a tough time doing so.
When you say "cross platform" I'm not sure what you mean. The article mentions nPOPq which is an email program for Windows only. It looks like nPOPq allows you to read your mail while it is still on the server, so no downloading is necessary. That would solve one problem mentioned above.
