I need a third-party program or something that is already in panther that will allow me to set a password for certain sensitive files for school and work. I am already using a password protected account but I want additional software that will ask for another password when trying to access the particular folders in question. I would rather not use filevault because that doesn't ask for a password once youv'e loggged in- your home folder is open to prying eyes- Some thing free would be nice. I have already fooled around with folder permissions in the "get info" option and have had no luck, maybe I'm just doing it wrong. PLEASE HELP!

In the same vein as FileVault, you could create encrypted disk images, via Disk Utility, that houses your sensitive data. When someone wants the data, they can double-click the image file just like they would a folder. It'll ask for a password before mounting.
Sound like a plan?

What happens if you have an alias to a file in a protected disk image?

More like twenty - I'd have to play around with Disc Utility to work out how to make password protected ones!

ed: Well, it only took ten minutes.
What happens is that a dialog window pops up asking you for the image password.
