Console/virtual terminal

Hi all,
In Linux there is the possibility to go out of the X-windows system and into a "virtual terminal"/console by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+F1 keycombination. This makes it possible to exit Xwindows if some program freezes the X display, and then kill the offending program. I have used this feature a few times when Mozilla caused Xwindows to hang on my linux box...

My question is: is there something similar to this in OSX? Sometimes a OSX program will freeze the display, and it would be nice to be able to kill it in the same way as on a linux box...

The "blind force quit" works well sometimes, especially for apps that take up the full screen. Command-option-escape followed by two Returns (one to select the app from the menu, one for the confirm dialog box) will quit the currently active app. If this fails, you usually have to ssh in and kill the process because OS X doesn't have the ability to escape to the console last time I checked.
