Sadly, I don't have an iMac in front of me to test this with, however I was under the impression that in the Sound PrefPane under the Output tab setting the "nubbin" would stay wherever you wanted it to. Perhaps you're not using the built in audio for a device here. Can you give us more info? Thanks!

It's a standard 17" G4 iMac with OS X 10.2.4 but I'm having this problem since the first release of Jaguar which came with my iMac in September last year. No special drivers, no special Software - happens with normal DVD playback and iTunes.
I first thoughts it was my error but I can reproduce this every time. Put the sound balance slider to the middle and play a DVD or some MP3s at higher volume and the balance slider shifts to the rights. The mic on the G4 iMac is located on the lower left hand edge of the display frame. So it must be some kind of feature. The sliders moves more to the the rights, if the volume is higher.
The speakes delivered with the iMac are exactly positioned at the edge of the 17" flat panel just 3 or 4 inches behind its front.
I once experimented with the voice recognition, maybe the problem come from this application. I already searched the knowledge base at Apple and did some Google queries, but I did not find a solution to this problem.
Hope you can help me because it is really annoying to adjust the balance every time I play some DVDs or MP3s at higher volume.
