Template user account (with AD)

Hi all,

I am making an image for a lab of Macs running Tiger 10.4.2. I've created a template user account with custom dock, apple menu and a few lock-down features etc and am trying to make this the default template for all users who log on.
I have tried the method described here (http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/printthread.php?Board=techissues&main=673429&type=post), however, it doesn't seem to be working (User logs on and gets the regular Mac template settings).
Something that I should mention is that the Macs are on Active Directory and my user's accounts are connecting to their home folders via the option in AD. I wondered if this may be the reason that they are not grabbing the template account settings?

One other thing...Back in testing stages I managed to download an application called 'template' which copied a user template to the default template location and this method DID work. I can't remember if I had the user's home folders connecting via AD back then though - but I would sure like to download the 'template' app again and try it out - but I can't find the download page!!! So if anyone knows of this program and where I can download it, please show me the link! :)

Oh, this template app was not the template script found on the Bombich site. It was actually an application - with a paperclip as the icon, if that helps anyone's memory ;)

Kind regards,

Jeremy Evans

Are these AD users with network homes? If so, I'm not sure where the initial home directory files are copied from. If it was an Open Directory on OS X Server, I believe the files would actually be copied from the template folder on the server itself.

It might be some kind of permissions issue. On a clean system, take a look at the user and group owners of the template and make sure that your customized version matches. But this would only help if the computer is in fact using that template. Can anyone verify that's how it works?

Hi giskard,

Yes, they are AD users with network homes. Unfortunately, my employer does not own an OS X server - I have requested that this be included in next year's budget!

I just had a look at the permissions on my template folder and the backup of the 'original' template folder and they do match:

'/System/Library/User Template'

Owner: System (RW)
Group: wheel (R)
Others: (R)

and the same for the 'User Template Backup' that I made.

Regards,
Jeremy.
