The volume controller in the menu bar seems to provide two independent settings. There's the normal setting, and a different one if you OPTION click on the speaker icon... but I'm not clear how it might be different.
Does anyone have any insight into this? I thought it might be the difference between MASTER and ALERT volumes, or left/right but that doesn't seem to be the case...
It seems to know and remember if you make a different volume setting for when the speaker is clicked while holding down the option key.
I wouldn't call this an easter egg, but I figure they're getting ready to implement something, and the indicator support is there, but no action occurs yet behind the scenes.
So here's a challenge for all of you!

Hey, that's cool.
For me it seems to be the Alert sounds volume upon option-clicking.
Nice..

It doesn't seem to be synchronized with the Alert Volume setting in the System Preferences, though, so I'm not sure if this is what it is for...
Hmmm... maybe the programmer group at Apple has even forgotten about this interface item and never got around to linking it properly to the Alert sound settings. I wonder if they read this forum? ;-) ;-)
Is there some trick I can do to force an alert box to pop up? I can't think of what I can do to generate a alert sound! It would help with my experimenting.

the applescript command "beep" will make an alert beep.
