FCP 3.x will not launch (unexpectedly quit)

Whenever I try to launch Final Cut Pro 3, I immediately get the message: "The application Final Cut Pro has unexpectedly quit." As a test, I made a new user, and as that user I am able to launch it normally with no problems. However, I would prefer to run FCP as my normal user, so I would like to see if anyone here can help me to figure out what the problem is.

I have tried re-installing FCP after scrupulously deleting any FCP-related file I could find, but to no avail.

Running PB G4, 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM, OS 10.2.4 (but I had the same problem under 10.2.3).

If it works for a new user but not for your original user, that sure sounds like there is a preference file or something that is screwing it up. Look in ~/Library/Preferences (~ = your home folder).

You might also want to try logging in to your normal account while holding down the shift key to disable any third party additions. It's possible that something you've installed in your normal account could be causing a problem with FCP.

Okay, took your advice and removed the FCP-related files in ~/Library/Preferences. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

Also tried copying the prefs from the user where FCP works into my user's prefs folder. That didn't work, either.

Any ideas?

Did you try my idea?

Yes, djn1, I just finished trying your idea and it didn't work, either.

Appreciate the suggestions so far; can anybody think of something else to try?

I'm not really familiar with FCP but does it utilise plugins that might be installed in your user account but not in the one which works?

This really does sound like a conflict of some sort. It might be worth running top when in your normal account and also in the one where FCP works (open the terminal and type 'top' <return>). This might help you identify whether there's anything else running that might be causing the problem.

I solved the problem using a sort of brute-force method. I narrowed it down to a single preference file:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist

I first removed ALL my pref files, re-logging in, then then finding that FCP launched fine. So it had to be one of those (210 !) files. I put them back in groups of about a dozen at a time, and determined when FCP stopped being able to launch.

Eventually I narrowed it down to that one file, trashed it, and now everything is just fine.

Thanks for your ideas -- you all definitely put me on the right track!
