once i select "Show Displays in Menu Bar" the "detect Displays" options is there right from the start without an external monitor plugged in. I use a PB-400.
alternatively, use
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu
clicking it will give you the display menu bar icon, which has the detect displays option and (on my machine) switches displays without opening System Preferences.
dunno whether you can savely add it to your login-items though.
Strange, strange!
When I click the menu item you mention in single display mode I get the menu entry "detect display".
Once I connect the second monitor, it disappears, being replaced by turn on mirroring.
Strange thing is: If then I de- and again reactive the menu from system prefs it shows up again.
Deconnecting and detecting again... and it is gone again!
Can't have it in both modes single AND dual display which, also because of the strange behaviour _sucks_
Do you have further ideas?
Thanks again for the input!

i'm sorry, but your explanation does not really make sense to me. :(
if i understood correctly, the display.menu -item is somewhat separate from the System-Preferences. (in fact SysPref might change displays through it) This seems reasonable to conclude from the fact, that you can activate it on its own.
Apparently, when it's active, its "listening' for monitors (or changes in hardware configuration), hence the change after you plug in the second monitor. if you reactivate the display.menu after having plugged in your second monitor, it is not aware of any changes to your hardware, and so offers you the option to search (aka "detect displays") again.
Hope i made myself clear enough. ;)

you what?? could you please restate what you are trying to achieve?
thanks

Need display detection after I have plugged in my second monitor and after I have unplugged it.
But the "detect display" menu item of the "Displays icon" in the menu bar only offers it after my PB has detected two monitors.
With your hint it (clicking on the menu item in Finder) it also was there in single display mode, but gone in dual display mode.
I just want to have it in both modes, because otherwise I wether have to fire up Sytem Preferences when I connect my second monitor, or (after your tip) when disconnect my second monitor.

can't see why you would want to have the item there after you disconnect the second display. unfortunately, as i don't have a second display to test, i'm afraid, i won't be able to help you with that anyway. the only other system method of getting this is IMHO applescript, using the new GUI scripting, to have the button in SysPrefs pushed for you. unfortunately i'm not skilled with that either.
sorry

because my PB still thinks that the second display is connected making me loose windows, my cursor and of course having less graphics performance.
I need to "detect displays" after connecting to make everything work as it should with a single display.
Thanks for your input!
