Son of a !@#$%!!! I've tried abunch of tips to fix the "no login screen" at startup. My Powerbook G3 Series was running fine until I installed that Security Patch last week.
Now, at startup, I get that blue screen. Is there a way I can change my prefs in Single-User mode to set "autologin"?
I really don't want to re-install. Anyone have any ideas? I've been booting into 9.2.1 the last 3 days. It works fine there, but I miss OS X (10.2.4).
Please, I'm accepting any and all suggestions.
thnx,
rob

boot to single user and examine /var/log/system.log
there may be some clue in there, before the current boot messages, regarding why the previous boot failed to turn the corner to the login panel.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Here's what I found:
It seems the loginwindow justs keeps crashing. What would cause that?
This system.log error repeated a number of times over 5mins.

can you boot into safe mode by holding down shift at start up?

Yes, I can...and I have. I tried mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwingow.plist loginwindow.plist.old
...along with all of the other suggestions by Apple and other sites.
The log suggests that the loginWindow is crashing at startup. Is there a way I can edit a file in Single-User mode to set 'autologin'?
I'm about to just re-intstall 0S X, OS 10.2, OS 10.2.3. Every since I installed that recent 'Security Update', I've had this problem.
What next?

do you only have one user account on this unit? you may try booting off an os 10.2 cd and wipe all the user settings for your accounts back to factory defaults. whenever a user for my company screws up any kind of user settings, passwords, etc etc i just do that. it will not erase the data on the hd. you can choose that option by doing a custom install. other than that i cannot offer much more help. good luck

Yes, just one account. I'll try that.
But, booting from the OS 10.2 CD boots right into the install. I don't see any of my drives on the desktop to be able to wipe the user account out.
?
rob
thanks for the help.

when you boot off the os 10.2 cd and start to run the install as normal when you get to the screen to select which drive you want to install it on there is a customize button towards the bottom. click on that and go through the customize options.

I've been having the same problem as the original poster. I was curious if this solution would delete my Entourage mail and mail settings? Its really the only thing I want to keep.

yes it probably will (im not 100 percent sure) so export all your entorauge settings to a back up file and when you reinstall it, import them back in. in outlook (the pc version) they are .pst files i have never backed up the mac version so i am not sure what they will be.
