Research/Auto-Fill of MP3's ID3 tags?

I have approximately 800+ MP3s on my computer, and they have very little information in their ID3 tags: just the song title, artist's name, and genre.

I'd like to very thoroughly fill everything in. However, I'd much prefer not to do this manually, given the immense effort that would entail.

The only way I've figured out I could do this is a feature of MP3 Rage (http://www.chaoticsoftware.com/ProductPages/Mp3Rage.html), but the feature seems to be (a) imperfect, (b) unable to be run in a sort of ‘batch' mode (I understand I'd have to make individual selections, but it'd be nice to be able to select multiple files!), and (c) prone to crashing the app.

If a command-line application can do it, or an X-Windows application can do it, it's worth the effort for me to get that installed and running. (It's for that reason I'm posting this to those respective forums as well.)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Can you say iTunes?

If I recall correctly you can update all MP3 tags at once from within iTunes, but it's been a while since I've done it (and I'm on WinNT at work right now).

I think he's asking about a program/script that would either

use the given file name as part(s) of the mp3 tags, filling in what it could somewhat intelligently (winamp on pc does this, although, like everything else on pc, you don't want to trust your data to it)

or

use an online service of some sort (like the CDDB) to gather all information available about the track, depending on multiple sets of parameters..

i don't know of anything that does either of these..
maybe someone can fire off an applescript?

Doug Adams' "Filenames to Track Names" seems to do what you want:

Copies the filenames of all (or just selected) tracks in the hilited playlist to the corresponding tracks' name tag. (Not recommended for use in OS X if your iTunes Preferences are set to Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized. Under this circumstance, iTunes will always try to name the file using the track name, and running this script will create a bizarre loop where the filename and track name will never be the same. There is no way to over-ride this.)

It's here (http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/scripts09.shtml).

I appear to spoken too vaguely. I indeed am looking for some utility that will ...

i used MP3 Rage to attempt this duty at one time and it failed miserably.

and the iTunes/CDDB service, and those of that ilk, seems to need a CD to fulfill its duties; it won't be able to ident individual songs.

Sorry WCityMike, somebody said "filename" and "AppleScript" and I jumped without looking. ;)

MP3Rage is the only app I know of that will do this cataloging. But, as others have pointed out, it's not especially stable.

One possible avenue to explore is Perl. There's a
CDDB/FreeDB module (http://search.cpan.org/author/RCAPUTO/CDDB-1.08/CDDB.pm) that can retrieve info from the CDDB. I'd offer to whip up a script that does this, but I'm only three chapters into the llama book.

Oh, wait! I just found rebot3.pl (http://www.headmqa.com/rebot3/). It seems to do what I was just saying, but it doesn't work in batch mode.

I'm with mervTormel on this one. As I understand it, there is information on a CD that is used as a key to look up information at CDDB/FreeDB/etc. to determine track names, album names, etc.

If that information is not inserted into an mp3 at rip/encode time, how are you going to be able to go back and get it? Maybe someone's script takes chunks of an mp3 filename and uses that information to look up information... but that seems dicey. I've seen too many spelling variations given to mp3 tracks by people submitting information to those lookup services.

That's the tactic that MP3 Rage uses, correct, except that it uses something from any existing MP3 tag. But you're correct that it's a rather dicey proposition.
