drag becomes double-click

Okay,

Here is the situation. I have a G3 iBook running OS X.1.3, and I'm
having a strange problem trying to drag items. When I click and hold
the response is kind of like a double-click rather than a drag. Folders open up suddenly and windows pop forward if the cursor goes over them. Also, there is a tiny white-outlined selection box that trails around after it, constantly resizing itself. I've noticed that sometimes items I'm trying to move will drag with me a little bit before opening. When I boot directly into OS 9.2 there is no problem.

I have a Kinesis keyboard (Essential MPC model kb123mpc), which is the type with the concave hollows for your hands, but it is not programmable. There is an old style PC keyboard plug (not PS2) connected to an ADB adapter connected to a USB adapter (made by Compucable) that goes into my computer.

Now, I don't have any problems if I connect other keyboards or just use
the laptop keyboard, but as soon as I plug in the Kineses I can't drag
things properly either with an external mouse or the trackpad.

Any idea what might be going on? I've tried tweaking all the settings I
can find that have to do with keyboard or mouse control and nothing
seems to make a difference.
