it's called firewire target disk mode (fwtdm). this might get you started.

if your going to copy files rather than swap disks, you'll want to use the ditto command or utilities of that ilk (carbon copy cloner). need more info? just ask.
to avoid fwtdm, if the G4 OS9 install is expendable, you might slave your imac disk on the bus, and wipe/partition that OS9 sucker, ditto copy your OSX install and be done.
