I have a Zoom v90 USB Modem which worked perfectly fine in Panther v10.3.5 but upon upgrading to v10.3.6 it now will not dial. I have since upgraded to Panther v10.3.9 but I am still having the same problems.
The modem shows up in the System Preferences Network settings, but when I try and connect via Internet Connect the red activity light on the modem flashes (this normally occurs prior to when the On light comes on and then the modem will dial) but after flashing about three times Internet Connect quits (disconnects?) trying and I get an error message saying that a modem error has occured.
I've read previous posts where people have stated that USB modems don't work well and some that have suggested that a driver update is required.
Well, AFAIK the only driver associated with this modem is the CCL script and thinking that this may have been the problem I purchased the Mac Modem Magic package of scripts but although they work great in Panther 10.3.5 they didn't help with Panther 10.3.6.
As I can't afford broadband and my computer has neither a built-in modem or vacant PCI slot my only choice seems to be a USB modem.
I have read on this forum and the Apple forum of others having the same and similar problems after upgrading from Panther 10.3.5 to v10.3.6 so if anyone knows what changed from Panther v10.3.5 to v10.3.6 that may have caused this problem I would greatly appreciate hearing about it and hopefully then I can begin to figure out how to fix it.
Also, if anyone knows of a USB modem that actually works with Panther v10.3.9 I would really appreciate hearing about it.
Thank you very much.

download zterm, then do some basic debugging:
in zterm, after selecting your modem, type
ATZ
the modem should reply
OK
Next type
ATH1
you should now hear the modem go offhook.
ATH
to put the receiver back.
If all that works out, your modem is ok and it's just what it's being told that causes problems.

Thank you for the suggestion and prompt reply.
Perhaps I am missing something here but considering the fact that the modem works perfectly fine in Panther v10.3.5 wouldn't that indicate that the modem is functioning properly and that it is indeed what it is being told the problem ? FWIW, I'm using the modem now but have gone back to Jaguar v10.2.8 which I have installed on another drive.
I suspect that somehow Panther v10.3.6 and above is corrupting the modem scripts.
I was able to connect once using Panther v10.3.8 and a convoluted series of steps involving first selecting an alternative script in the System Prteferences ->Network-> modem settings and then shutting down and performing a cold boot. However, I have not been able to recreate this as of yet with v10.3.9 and it only worked once in 10.3.8.
Thanks for any further insight into this problem.
