Apache not accepting https connections after 10.3.9 update and new ethernet card

I have a dual 1.8 G5 that we're running as a webserver using Apache. We've using Thawte SSL certs to provide SSL connections via mod_ssl for the last several years without a hitch.

On Friday, my server stopped accepted https connections. I THINK it has something to do with 10.3.9, but I'm not for sure. Here are the things that happened on Friday morning:

1. Internal ethernet card went wonky. I could access the server via ssh and I could use a browser on the server to access websites, but it was SERVING webpages VERY slowly, causing many browsers to timeout.

2. At the time, I didn't know it was the ethernet card, as I could still connect to it via various other means, so I updated the system software from 10.3.4 to 10.3.9 by running the 10.3.9 Combined Update via Software Update. That did NOT correct the slow webserving problem, but I did NOT check to see if SSL connections were still working.

3. I put an Asante FriendlyNet 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter (PCI) in the G5, and everything seemed to return to normal as far as network access and serving web pages. The card was configured to use the same IP address as the internal card. I thought the problem correctly solved.

4. On Monday morning (today), I discovered that you cannot connect to the server via https. With Safari, you get the following message:

"Safari can’t open the page “https://[address]?because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server “[address]?"

Other browsers give similar message.

I DID NOT change the httpd.conf configurations or ANYTHING ELSE except what was noted above (updating to 10.3.9 and installing the PCI ethernet card).

When I start Apache, I get no errors on the config file, no errors in the ssl_engine_log, and no ENTRIES (or errors) in the ssl_request_log.

I followed the configuration advice in Apple's article on using mod_ssl with OS X (http://developer.apple.com/internet/serverside/modssl.html). That includes a bit that goes:

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
Listen 443
Listen 80
</IfModule>

And while I cannot establish a secure connection with this server, I CAN connect to it on port 443, which seem to support that the mod_ssl.c module is loading correctly (as does the lack of errors from apache when I start/restart it).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Steven
