I've configured my AP (an RG-1000 aka original ABS) to accept both encrypted and unencrypted traffic. How did you do that? I've never seen an option like that in Airport Admin Utility. Usually wireless security is either on or off.
I used Jon Sevy's Java ABS configurator (http://edge.mcs.drexel.edu/GICL/people/sevy/airport/index.html#Configurator); there's a check box called "Allow unencrypted data" that I activated.
Has anyone suceeded in installing the Wireless Tools for Linux package (http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.html) (didn't see anything on Fink or DarwinPorts)? Or is it not possible to use something like this due to the closed drivers that AirPort Extreme uses?
I keep my AP open (to unencrypted traffic) as a 'community service'; and as bad as WEP is, it's still better than nothing....
Any ideas anyone?

Before going any further I would check to see if Airport will really allow unencrypted and encrypted traffic at the same time.
I am fairly sure you will find this is impossible for good technical reasons that Apple didn't try to solve since such a network would effectively have no security - irrespective of the security protocol in use.
It would be simple for me to record encrypted and unencrypted traffic and thus deduce the key in use and break the encryption - and as you point out WEP it's really secure any more anyway.
The bottom line is if you have reason to need security turn it on - and if it's unnecessary/inconvenient turn it off.

To do both, keep the network open and use IPSEC for your own connections.

A suggestion that I've only just thought of. :)
