I have an original base station up at College where they have a network using a DNS server. Now, sometimes, the network just DROPS OUT. My Apple base station can't find any dns router to even give it an IP address. Any clues?

For what it's worth, I've been having similar problems with my cable modem. It seems to have started when my ISP (Comcast) had to create their own network after Excite@home went bankrupt. It's strange in that it's intermittent. I haven't found a solution.

Things have been a little intermittent over the past few days, sometimes it works first time, but mostly you have to retry.
This weekend I am attempting to get my PC using the Airport as a router (should be possible if you enable DHCP on ethernet clients, as I'm just going to plug the PC into the hub???). We'll see if the PC experiences the same problems, because I've read of some DOS utilities that let you find what DNS server etc that the connection is using.
FWIW, Craig asked me if I get the same problem when I connect the iBook straight to the ADSL modem. Either doing this, or connecting via the hub led to authentification problems on the "dial-up" part of the connection. I guess this means if I didn't have the Airport I wouldn't be connected at all.
Dial-up using modem is starting to look attractive :-(
Will report how we get on with the PC.

i was having that trouble with a couple of the machines in my house and then i finally figured it out. this is what it was in my case, dont know for sure if it is helpful to you. i bought a 250 ft spool of 8 conductor ethernet wire and put my own ends on it. i have done that may times before. to make a long story short all the machines that were using the cables i made that were longer than about 40 feet they were having troubles getting an ip and keeping it. i was running the LAN at 100 base and one section at 10 base for my older machines. i switched the cables into the 10 base hub and all the machines have been able to keep the ips for at least a couple months now. on the same note any of the cables i made that were like, say, 15 feet worked fine at 100 base. it seems like that cable was a lower grade cable or something.
