OS 9 and that damn MTU setting

Hi - after struggling with sharing our DSL connnection using a variety (settled with BrickHouse at the moment) of OS X utilities, I discovered that the problems were all to do with open transport on OS 9 having it's MTU set to 1500 by default and the MTU path discovery thing not really working properly under OS 9...

By setting the MTU to something less than 1500 (using 1400 at the moment but have not fine tuned) with OT advanced tuner on the OS 9 box, I can share the connection successfully.

The thing that is frustrating me now is that I have to pay $25 to register OT advanced tuner to make this setting permanent (or be able to set it each time) on the OS 9 box - it seems uneccessary having to get such a full featured shareware utility to do somethign on my flatmate's computer that I can do so simply on my OS X machine with:

ifconfig en0 mtu 1400

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how I might solve this problem without resorting to purchasing a $25 piece of software that we'll probably have no use for in a month or so once my flatmate finally gets round to upgrading to OS X.

Is there a way to either:

Set up my OS X box better so that the OS 9 box can negotiate an appropriate MTU - or even work with the default MTU of 1500

or

Set the OS 9 box to have a permanent MTU setting of our choosing without having to resort to OT advanced tuner (may be resedit hack would do it?)

or has someone got alternative ideas to explore to get the OS 9 box to be able to use the shared connection?

TIA - dan.

i think there's an apple unsuppported OT fiddler app. i can't remember what it's called, but i think it might be in the one of the extras folders on an OS8-9 install disk.

I did notice some info at the apple site prior to posting my question regarding "OT Tuner" from apple - actually it was a reference to a document at asu.info.apple.com - but unfortunately the apple document is no longer available at that address and searches in the tech info library for that document return nought...

the document mentioning this interesting piece of S/W is at:

http://www.macnn.com/contributions/ottuner.shtml

Other than that I do remember a couple of apps to do OT tuning from way back in my system 7 or 8 days - but can't find it on any of my backup cds from back then - must not have realised how useful this app could be back then!

Can't find anything on the OS 9 CD and OS 8 CDs are in storage... had a look on our Asante ethernet card installer CD as I read somewhere that there was a utility on there - but... nought! :(

sorry for slow reply / turnaround in testing... anyway - unfortunately atcpipo didn't do much for me... apart from cause a few crashes and hangs. I had thought that dissabling the MTU path discovery would improve the situation - but now I believe that the only way is to force the MTU on the OS9 box to be under 1500.

What would be best though would be if I could reconfigure my OS X box to be able to handle these oversized packets from the OS9 box - and split them up accordingly?

Just thinking that an OS X solution would be most sensible - so I don't have to change any future OS9 boxes that get added (specially as guests) to the network...

I always wanted that too. I have 5 macs on a shared connection, and one of then must use OS 9, unfortunately. I had to configure each one one by one, which is ridiculous. A good server should do the trick and send it to the clients.
If anyone knows how to do this (I'm sure there must be a way) please let us know.
