OSX as an NIS server? Is it possible?

I'm trying to set up OSXS 10.1.3 as an NIS server.

First of all it took me forever to realize that ypserv was in /usr/libexec. That's cool, though. By searching around a bunch I found all sorts of documentation on how to set up NIS on NeXT, *BSD, Linux, Sun, AIX, you name it. I even found documentation on using OSX as an NIS client, but in the part where it talks about using it as a server, it simply states "Anyone should be able to set up OSX as an NIS server, so we're not going to document it here."

In looking through the NeXT docs, though, I found out how to dump the netinfo information for /etc/passwd, /etc/group, everything..

Then I figure since ypserv is running, portmap is running, everything's where it should be, I would run /sbin/ypinit.sh -m.

Well, it happily accepts my information on which machine the server would be, and then goes on to do a 'make' in /var/yp. Unfortunately, either there is something very wrong with ether the Makefile's in /var/yp, or the programs the Makefile is trying to run. Doing a make -d in /var/yp shows that its looking for the very same files that the Makefile is supposed to be creating. If I do a touch on each of those files, make finishes with some errors, and viola.. nothing works.

If anyone has used OSX as an NIS server or has ANY suggestions on any of this, I would be glad to hear from you. Please respond here or by email. My email address is:
