Airport - severe network delays - HELP!

I really need help with this one ?I’ve searched everywhere but cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

I have an iMac (400 DVSE, OSX) with airport installed, iBook (2001, OSX) with airport installed, and an Airport basestation.

I have the basestation set up to connect to the internet on a dial-up connection, and am using DHCP and NAT to supply an IP address to each computer. This enables both computers to work fine for connecting to the internet for surfing and mail. I leave both machines connected to the wireless network permanently, since I don’t see a need to ever turn airport off.

However, when I want to do certain other things on my computer I suffer intolerable delays with the spinning coloured disc. Connecting to server, Login Window, Users, all can result in a delay of up to 60 secs before I can do anything in that app again.

If I am connected to the internet, there is no delay. Similarly, if I turn Airport off there is no delay. But with airport on, I cannot easily connect to my other machine quickly.

Can anyone PLEASE shed some light on this. I must be doing something wrong since I cannot find anyone else with a similar problem on the web.

Thanks,

jr

i think you have "connect to the internet when needed" option enabled somewhere. therefore, when you are not connected, the computer is trying to establish an internet connection, hence the beachball...

maybe try the network/modem preferences to see if you can spot something like that there.

rgds.
