My Downloads stop...is it IE or ME?

I have ADSL here in Australia.

I'm using Netspace for those who care.

-----------The Problem------------
In Internet Explorer, I will attempt to download something. Like Netscape 6, or the developer package from Apple (reputible FTP servers) and after a little while, the Download stops, and it says "waiting for data" right now, it's been "waiting for data" for about 5 hours, after it started out at 55k/s.
-----------The Problem------------

I have a proxies set up as Netscape (the ISP) has suggested. like this:

FTP proxy : proxy.netspace.net.au PORT 8080
Web Proxy : same
Secure web proxy : same

I'm using an Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem, and I have removed the dockling that alcatel installs.

I am using Carracho, and I can sustain data transfers for hours at a time.
But not if I'm using IE.

it's a REAL PAIN!

Any ideas?

Interrupted downloads that stall out are not too unusual, unless it's the rule for you.

In IE, open your Downloads Manager through the Window menu, double-click on the download that's stalled, and then click on Reload. That might get things going again.

What's most likely happening is that you're downloading from a VERY REMOTE server and the signal's being bounced around the world before connecting you. If one or more of these nodes drops you for a few seconds, you lose your place "in line" with others, and after awhile, the ftp server times out on the download.

That's a good thought, but before I reinstalled 10.1.3 this weekend, it had only happened 2-4 times in the past YEAR. and now it's EVERY time I use IE to Download something.

Also, Interachy gives me a warning about using web proxy for FTP. What does that mean, and should I use Interarchy for my FTP downloads?

(thanks for the reply)
