I've been using this set up with both machines running os9. I was able to have both machines share the internet connection, with the iMac serving as the AirPort (software) base station to the iBook. Now that I’m “graduating?to osX, I was wondering how I can have this setup (the iMac serving as an AirPort base station to the iBook), but the iMac running on osX. I’ve contacted the Apple people, but they told me that osX does not support the option of software AirPort base station, and that I’ll need to purchase the base station itself. Anyone here have any luck with 3rd party software, or other “hacks?or “scripts?that solve this problem. Be gentle with me, I’m very new to osX, so there might a real obvious solution to this, but being a “newbe?I’m unaware of any of them. I’d also be interested to know if anyone has been able to do file sharing between two Macs using just the two AirPort cards without the base station.

Thanks,

Mika.

A search on versiontracker came up with this link:
http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=13335&db=mac

I have no experience with this but the reviewers gave it thumbs up.

Good luck.

re: filesharing, no problemo.

i have a g4 desktop happily acting as a software basestation to a pizmo thanks to IPNetRouter (aka ipfw and natd)... with the Computer-to-Computer networking enabled in the Airport menulet/droplet, file sharing is just spiffy. Enable filesharing on one machine, connect to the other by specifying ip# and all works just great. File xfer is about 5-600k/sec.... a touch slower than 100BaseT ;-) but it does the job just fine.

Kewl.

looks like them ppl at apple don't know what they're talk'n about... told me it can't be done without the base station... something to do w bridging or other.. and what do you know, i'm now serving my 160gig external firewire HD through apple talk using just the 2 airport cards.

tnx again.

much appreciated.
