Mysterious connecting

OS X keeps mysteriously connecting to the internet by itself without any rhyme or reason. This often happens after I've checked my email or surfed the web and then disconnected. A few minutes later it will reconnect, whether or not there are any applications open. Also, regularly (I think - certainly any time I've been around to see it) at about 3am it connects to the Internet and seems to sit there and do nothing. I can't find any kind of schedule that should be controlling this, it's not a Software Update check for example. It's really odd and I'd appreciate some advice if anyone else has experienced this problem. Ooh, just had a thought, could it be something to do with iTools? Maybe OS X is trying to index my iTools virtual disk or something, perhaps my older machine that I used to have connected to this one via Ethernet but because ethernet's not selected in the Internet Connect location it tries to connect via TCP/IP? I've no idea but it's really annoying. Particularly as my old phone goes 'ting' every time it connects. This can be quite disturbing at 3 in the morning.

I've had the same problem. I turned off everything I could find in the prefs that allowed automatic connections to the internet. This included (as you noted) Software Update. Also, the "Use network time server" in Date & Time, and the "Connect when starting TCP/IP Applications" under the PPP Options in the Network prefs. I haven't had the computer dialing up on its own since. I really suspect the network time server in this case.

Well, my network time server option is off, so I don't think it's that. And I like having the 'Connect when starting TCP/IP applications' option on, so that Entourage can check my mail without me having to connect and disconnect every time. Hmm.

Has anyone noticed how almost every piece of software you buy or download these days has a 'check for software updates weekly' option that defaults to on? It's infuriating.
