Darwin 8.0 and Mac OS X 10.3.9

Theoretically, can I install Darwin 8.0 and still have Mac OS X 10.3.9 running? I have XDarwin 4.4.0 installed because I like to bypass OS X and run Xfree86 via >console login--but I'd really like to just have Xdarwin be "upgraded" to 8.0 and still take advantage of the tweaks on the MAch Kernal.

Does this make sense?

In other words: I want to install Darwin 8.0 to take the place of XDarwin 4.4.0, and make a XDarwin 8.0 so I can run x11 without launching Mac OS X.

Please, understand that Darwin and XDarwin are two different things:

--Darwin (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/) is the open source Unix-based foundation of the Mac OS X operating system. Darwin 8.0.1 corresponds to the open source core of Mac OS X 10.4 and is available free of charge.

--XDarwin 4.4 is an open-source implementation of X11. It runs in Mac OS X via Darwin.

While there is indeed some confusion in the post, I understand you want to either run XWindows only and avoid Aqua to start up at all or run OS X on the same partition.

It is quite possible that you can do that just by doctoring /etc/rc and friends. I'd install both OS X and Darwin side-by side on different machines or partitions and explore how Darwin boots, then try to mimick that on the OS X side to have the choice.

Slightly far out, but certainly doable !

Thanks for the insight.

By editing /etc/ttys and uncommenting the "#console "/usr/libexec/getty std.57600" vt100 on secure" line, then commenting the following line, you keep the WindowServer from starting at all, dropping you into console mode after boot.

Not that it would matter, since XDarwin will need the WindowServer and CoreGraphics, anyway...
