Kbabel install error :(

Hi guys :)

Long time no e. Hope things have been going well for you.

I do as much voluntary translating as I can for the OSS community, and I've been trying to install Kbabel, an excellent .po editor, for ages. All I get are errors. Using Fink Commander, and asking it simply to install (no binary), and using the default responses to choice points, I get this error:

*** ERROR ***

You don't a valid teTeX installation; you are missing the file(s)
/usr/local/teTeX/lib/libkpathsea.a /usr/local/teTeX/include/kpathsea/tex-file.h /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

If you are using Gerben Wierda's distribution, you might be able
to solve this problem by using the expert mode in i-Installer,
and installing 'TeX Programs (developer extras)'.

Otherwise, install the tetex-texmf and tetex-base packages
instead, or install teTeX manually from
http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html
and then retry installing the system-tetex package.

Failed: can't install package system-tetex-20010808-14

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Clytie asks what to do about this error from Fink: *** ERROR ***

You don't a valid teTeX installationIt appears fink's kbabel package requires "something that provides tetex", but fink cannot find an existing manually-installed tetex installation on your system. Fink can install its own tetex packages, however the default appears to be to look for a manually-installed (i.e., external to fink) tetex. If you are using Gerben Wierda's distribution, you might be able
to solve this problem by using the expert mode in i-Installer,
and installing 'TeX Programs (developer extras)'.
Well are you using Gerben Wierda's tetex installer? If so, did you try using the expert mode blah blah blah?
Otherwise, install the tetex-texmf and tetex-base packages
instead, or install teTeX manually from
http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html
and then retry installing the system-tetex package. If you have not used Wierda's i-Installer to install tetex yourself, then you need to either have fink install tetex for you or else install tetex yourself. If you want the former option (certainly easier and more reliable, as the i-Installer periodically shuffles its file locations and confuses the hell out of fink), tell fink to install those two tetex-... packages. But if you prefer to install tetex manually, then uh...go install it manually. Either way, you gotta take care of this before you can proceed with kbabel, since kbabel requires "something that provides tetex".

This would probably be a good time to note that "the default options" is prone to giving inconsistent package sets (mixtures of x11 and native graphics, conflicts between crypto and non-crypto variants of the same package, etc.).

Thanks for the responses. I did read the error message, but I have very little experience in Unix installs, so I didn't really know what to do next, or how each step would affect dependencies. I was told Kbabel doesn't need tetex to do the work I do, but evidently fink thinks it does... <sigh>

Thanks for the hint about the default responses: difficult, if you don't know what they mean, but it's useful to know they're not necessarily the right response. Flipping a coin might come in handy. :)

I'll try asking Fink to install those two packages. Why wouldn't it do that anyway, if it installs required modules? I don't think I understand how it works: I thought that was what it did: decide what the dependencies were, and install everything needed (particularly judging by the size of some of the installs...).

I hope this works <crosses fingers>

Thankyou

This isn't looking good: installing those two modules is now installing xfree86, and the last time Fink did that, it broke my x11 install ...

I think this issue is covered in Sao's FAQ that is a sticky thread in the X11 forums. There is a Fink placeholder that represents Apple's X11.

Yes, I remember it being mentioned. I'll chase up the sticky. Thanks. It looks like the tex packages installed OK (even though I do NOT need them), and I'm trying the kbabel install once more...

It looks like the tex packages installed OK (even though I do NOT need them),You most certainly <i>do</i> need them, if you wish to have fink do [whatever you told it to do that led to it wanting tetex]. Somewhere in the dependency tree of "kbabel needs packages a, b, c; each of a/b/c need lots of other things, which each need other things" is some package that requires some aspect of tetex.

Fink does all dependency tracking for you, but there are sometimes multiple ways to satisfy a given dependency. "Some tetex is needed", so should fink just flip a coin and decide whether to install its own or use a user's pre-existing one?

Clytie,

If you installed Apple's X11 but Fink keeps asking to install XFree86 or X.org and you are installing from 'binaries' what you need to do is reinstall the X11User package since the installer application occasionally misses installing a file.

Or if you're installing from 'source' then typically this error means that you need to (re)install the X11SDK. It is on the Xcode CD, and is not installed by default.

Please, read the Fink FAQ's (http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php?phpLang=en#apple-x11-wants-xfree86).

If you're still having problems, run in Terminal.app and post the result of:

sw-vers
fink -V
gcc -v
fink list -i system-xfree86

.

Since the tex packages installed xfree86, I don't understand what it's talking about. Can you please explain what I need to do in order to install successfully?

edit: (after noticing later msgs)

Hi Sao: thanks for the info.

I'm installing kbabel from source, because the binary install (according to fink commander) is 8 Gb.

Here's the output on those commands (although the sw-vers one wouldn't work, even with a space):
