Video playback is poor when playing wmv files

get a terrible fps, about 1,4, and a very high skipped frame count. The sound
is normal, but the picture is still/portion of the video. I have tried
running the files other places without problems, so I know they are OK. I
have also tried lowering resolution and colours, and heighten them, I have
run the DirectX tests, I have heightened/lowered video acceleration, I have scratched my head intensely, but to no avail.

It does seem that the same frames/video parts are shown at each attempt. I run on XP pro, have an S3 savage 4 graphic card (with newest drivers) I have not experienced this problem with In-game movies or such, but AVI files also have choppy frame rate, which doesn't follow the sound...

have an S3 savage 4 graphic card (with newest drivers)The video adapter is just too old, it's either PCI slot (very slow) or AGP x2 at best and only has 8Mb RAM. To get decent framerates I'm afraid you'll need to upgrade to something newer, preferrably with at least 64Mb or more RAM. You'll also need to consider compatibility with your motherboard if it's as old as your video card. You can find old 'refurbished' nVidia geForce 4's, and ATI Radeon 95xx series very cheap now, and they would even allow you to player newer (Dx 8) games.

as taelon mentioned, its likely your system isn't up to scratch. what are the specs(what hardware resides in your pc)?
