I have a few Region 2 DVD Movies - they will play on my computer, but not on my TV DVD player. How can I copy them so they will play on my TV?

I tried using DVD Decrypter followed by DVD Shrink, but the copy would not play on my TV. Help appreciated.

DVD Shrink can convert a region 2 DVD to region 1 but that's only half the issue. The main reason it won't display on your TV is because it is in the PAL (rather than NTSC) video format. You can convert video from PAL to NTSC but it's a little bit of work.

Try this (http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=&howtoselect=4%3B41&orderby=Date&listall=1&hits=25&archive=0&listallusers=&search=Search+or+List+Guides) link.

Is there a good tech book explaining all of this? I haven't seen any.
I don't need to become a complete expert, but enough to understand
the various types of file involved, what is needed to convert, etc.

If you follow up on the link in my earlier post you'll see some good guides on how to convert between the two formats. There's lots of different ways to do it, and none of them are really perfect, but you can still get decent results with some patience.

I still think from a practical standpoint the easiest thing is to buy a DVD player that will handle both PAL and NTSC.

If you still want to do a conversion the basic steps you'll need to do are:

Demux the original VOB's into an elementary video stream and audio stream. (TMPGEnc Plus or VOBEdit or PGC demux)

Do a framerate conversion on the video from 25 fps to 29.97 fps (DGPulldown)

Re-encode the video from 576 vertical resolution to 480 vertical. (TMPGEnc Plus)

Re-mux the audio and video (muxman or IFOEdit)

Here are some links on the software:

Here is just 1 more link for you to look at. :D

Honestly, it really isn't worth you time, and can yield "poor" results even if you are successful.

Learn how to convert NTSC files to PAL format and vice-versa here: http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=&howtoselect=4%3B41&orderby=Date&listall=1&hits=25&archive=0&listallusers=&search=Search+or+List+Guides

Its really not worth going there purely because of the fact the UK uses PAL. It is complicated enough changing formats and ripping DVDs to go into the complications of changing regional DVDs

I had the same problem and the key that saves all the hassles is:

All DVD players are capable of being multi regional but have lock codes all you need to do is find the unlock code for your DVD player. I bough an eBook of eBay for ?.50 and had it done within an hour

Hope this helps

As jmet said about the conversion, it hardly ain't worth the trouble. Get yourself one of these:

http://www.lfvw.com/cyberhome300.html

I picked one up at Best Buy about 6 months ago for $35. It handles all my Region2/PAL DVD's.

The Key words in this statements are LOCK CODES. You can't talk about bypassing the manufacturers codes to get around protected materials. Do i agree with the money makers, no. but the sensitive nature of the subject brings unwanted attention to an otherwise informative forum. We can only discuss the varieties of vidio editing, personal backups, and troublshoot vidio related problems. I hope you don't take offence to this, I'm just trying to look out for you.
