The Sims Lost Reg Key

My wife purchased "The Sims" just prior to Christmas at the Warehouse in Invercargill. Being Christmas the receipt disappeared along with countless others. Our 12yr old daughter received the game from Santa.

However when our daughter went to install it, she couldn't find the installation number. Neither could I. The instructions say it is on the back but the only numbers I can find on the plastic case are ISBN and the bar code. There is no number inside the case or in the two instruction guides.

So she cannot play this game which has caused a lot of disappointment.

I suspect the number was somewhere on the cellophane wrapping but that is long gone - and a downright silly place to put it.

Help.

And you expect us to believe that?

Really Winston001, you could do better. "The dog ate the case" has a more realistic ring to it?

Even having the receipt would probably be useless given the Warehouse (and most Retailers) attitude due to the rampant copying of CDs. If the CD is not faulty, its probably bad luck I suspect.

The number will certainly not be embedded in the CD as a rule, but I would have thought that its also unlikely to be on the cellophane either.

Go back into the Warehouse and explain, ask if you can see another CD to view just where the sticker should be. If its not on the cellophane but is on the case, you may have a case where your case is clearly missing the case sticker.

If you understand that, I will be amazed as well.

*cough* after understanding the returns process all too well at the red shed, take it back and claim it doesn't work. Say it was a gift and therefore didn't get the receipt. I can bet that this will work, chances are the person working won't really care, *cough*.

If **** hits the fan find the day you purchased it, and if you used some form of plastic they can retrieve the receipt.

It probably won't come to that though.

Good luck.

Which Sims game do you have? There are millions of them.

"Sims 2" has the key on a sticker on the inside of the case.

"Sims 2 Nightlife expansion pack" has the key on a sticker on the back of the manual.

I need to locate the discs, manuals and cases for "The Sims Collectors Edition" within a certain person's extremely messy bedroom but I am very sure they are either on the manual or on the case. I don't remember any keys being on the boxes' cellophane wrapping - they aren't that stupid.

Give your specs polish and have another good look at the manuals. ;)

Sometime's cd keys are put on the disc label.

Actually do you know stores policy of not accepted opened software for return is illegal?
Check out the Commerce Commissions cases on it. They can't do it.
Of course you would probably have to have a bit of a fight about it but if there is a legitimate reason...

Having said that, they never have the CD keys on the wrapper, its always either on the case or manual somewhere.

Right, well I have the case of "The Sims" here and the CD key is on the back of it.

Actually, to be more specific, it is stuck on the bit of paper inside the case so there is no way it could have been picked off the case. The bit of paper would be easy to remove though, so if you don't have a bit of paper advertising "Sim City 3000" on the back then you have no CD key. :p

*clearing throat* You can always rely on the Internet for any (almost) software's registration key. Legality is another issue :P

Was it from a special packaging?
I once bought a old game some time agao, Civilisation two, and it was a bundle of 2 games in one box and the game said pls refer to the technological advance chart when they ask you these questions to get science A .. you need science these 2 sciences, what are they? That chart was not in the box. I had Civilisation One as well and the chart is v big so no way I did lose it. For that thou wasn't too bad as you could go via hte games civilipedia and write down all the advances for all the sciences but yeah ....

The original Sims game?

Whats that go for, 4 or 5 bucks?

Buy another copy.

Though its sounds like a fine trick, Perhaps one day I can buy my boy a game and hide the serial, should be good for a laugh or two.  :p

Of course we do believe you Winston001, that you purchased the game, and that it came with no serial ... !

This old thread would have no meaning at all here, I am sure?

How so? Do you have any links because I find that quite an interesting proposition.

By golly GF, I do regret not meeting you in Chch to spill some coffee in your lap. Cheeky chap. :D

In fact call me naive but I only realised it was possible to obtain games on P2P a few days ago when I absentmindedly entered a software title into Limewire. I thought it was only used for music.

Metla is sort of right - it is The Sims and cost about $20. As opposed to The Sims 2 which costs about $84. But its a beastly swiz to sell a game without the serial number.

I've looked at the plastic case many times but there is no number there. There is a 0900 number for info and I tried the online help site but got a computer reply. Grrrrrrr!

I might try Dangerous Daves suggestion.

Essentially I am annoyed that my daughter has been disappointed. She has a present she cannot use and is worried it is her fault.

Can't be bothered searching again - have a look yourself under Fair Trading etc, they have some examples and the software thing was one of them....

Have you tried entering the barcode number ?

On all my Sims CD's the number is on the back, bottom left hand corner.

Well..... I certainly considered a PM from one of our old CD's. But then thinking that Winnie was, after all, an officer of the Court, having taken an oath to the Queen to uphold all that's holy, etc.... I gave the idea away. After all I would hate the idea of ..............

Thanks to everyone and especially those who PM'd me. Happily the crisis has been solved and I'm now sitting down to a huge slice of humble pie. Washed down by a fine malt vinegar. :yuck:

We went to the Warehouse and discovered a Sims 2 (no actual use here) case open. The serial number was plainly visible inside the case on an instruction manual. My daughter then checked our version yet again and lo and behold - the number was pasted in small print at the bottom of the back of our manual.

AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

And it works.

Of course the instructions specifically say on the back of the case but even so, I'd looked through the manual and never considered the back cover page.

So we live and learn. My apologies for wasting your time and once again thanks to PF1ers who populate the best community I've discovered on the net.

Thats for easy removal, there are insrutctions alongside the serial stating that you must attach the sticker to the PC that the software is installed on, or Bill Gates will steal your children.

I was supposed to do that for my brothers computer. But seeing how he's not that computer savvy, and that knowing him he'd lose it... Tough Luck MS. I got it stored in my wardrobe with my XP Pro CD.
