Reliability of DVD players

After my "new" DVD player failed after only 191 hours of use, i have to ask:

Is it just me, or are other people having reliability issues with their dvd players? And what brand have you got?

Denon 2900 un-modded - has worked fine for the last 6 months or so and has excellent PQ IMHO.

If buying again today I would also consider the new Denon A11 and the Pioneer 868AVi.

My previous Sony 735 is still going strong after nearly 4 years but I think that Sony has lost some of it's build quality of late.

Cheers, Lee

Modified Denon 2800 mk11, got it new for ?70 off empire direct complete bargain so can't complain. But it has been modified and has issues with outputting a pal progressive scan signal. NTSC progressive scan output is very good with some films but not for others, can't explain/ It also has other various issues-all the ones discussed on this forum before. I think a new firmware will improve things.
but still pleased, the picture can look much better than my old pioneer 656 but at times cannot.

Got my Pioneer 525 back in October 99 and it's still going strong, it's used for at least 3 or 4 movies a week, and is used for CD playback as well. It's a Techtronics modded machine, but was bought from Sevenoaks.

I'm looking at replacing it shortly, but only to upgrade to progressive scan and DVD-A/SACD.

Cheers,

Ian.

Toshiba sd210e no probs, had it a couple of years. I am also looking to upgrade to progressive scan.

Possibly hk25, sounds very good after all the positive comments on these forums.

Forgot to mention, I did buy a limit from richer sounds for the progressive scan, couldn't get the damn thing to work, picture kept apearing green on Plasma. Tried changing component cables, from QEd to chord, still no improvement. So it went straight back to the shop.

Toshiba beat that hands down in the normal mode for picture quality.

Denon 3800 here. Multi region & PAL progresive enabled no problems.

If buying now would probably upgrade to a Denon A11.

Sony DVP-S725 which I bought in December 1999. Has not been modded and has only ever had original discs played on it.

Still as perfect as it was when brand new.

.

that was not the cables. it would be the settings on the plasma the componant inputs on the screen need to be changed , can't remember if its yrcpbcr(bla) or RGB.

Panasonic 4 month's no probs

Sharp 3 years no probs

My Tosh 220 wouldn't play CDs. John Lewis fixed eventually (took 6 weeks).

Tried various players, the ones kept...
Toshiba SD-2109DB ( Unmodified R2 )....no problems
Panasonic DVD-XV10 ( Unmodified R2 )....no problems
Philips DVD-963SA ( Multi-Region / Pal-Progressive )....no problems
Denon DVD-3800 ( Multi-Region / Pal-Progressive )....no problems

Only faulty player was a Denon DVD-2800, same problems unmodified and modified, eventually replaced by Hayden Labs following lengthy grief.
Several faulty Philips DVD recorders, eventually replaced by DVD-963SA.

Like gandley and philb I have had a multiregion Pioneer 717 since it first came out and have experienced absolutely no problems at all - guess it must be about four years old now.
