Hi, I'm a minister at a church. I have a few questions.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://forum.digital-digest.com/
1.) My drama team wants to use songs (audio) that are only available on DVD. How do I take the audio off a DVD and put it on the computer and save it as an mp3 or wav file?

2.) Is it possible to take a section of a DVD and save just that section on the computer and play it on a projector?
I have read about several programs that claim to do this but I was wondering if there was a way without spending alot of money. The programs that I read about were DVD audio extractor, and cinematize 2.

Also I read about DVD's have some kind of protection, is there a way to get around that. I don't want to copy the dvd just put it on the computer as a clip.
I read the section for newbies but I did not understand the video lingo, I also searched the threads to see if any subject was similar to mine but no luck. Any help would be appreciated! thx

yes it is possible with for example dvd shrink:
- load your dvd into shrink
- click RE-AUTHOR at the top right hand side
- in the right half go to your MAIN MOVIE and drag this main movie to the left hand side
- in the left part go to the upper RIGHT corner and you will see a symbol of two arrows pointing in opposite directions
- click on this arrow-symbol
- this will start a new window within which you are now able to set the start and end mark of what you want to keep
- set start + end and leave this window
- now go to BACKUP, choose your destination folder (an empty one!) and click ok
now your selection will be saved with all necessary files and the correct structure to be able to burn these new files as a new VIDEO DVD
good luck

Thanks for the information it worked great. I have one more issue though, how do I edit the mp3. that I've made. For example if I want to shorten it 10 seconds off the start and 10 off the finish, what program would I use?
Also when I go through the DVD Shrink process I come out with a file extention that I'm not able to play on my computer, it says no program associated with this file. Is there a way to edit the dvd fotage and turn it into something I can view from my computer like a .mov, or wmv., mpeg or avi? Also is there a way to convert, join and split videos?

Strange.What file extensions r u talking about?
Also is there a way to convert, join and split videos?
Ofcourse there are plenty.Video Redo Plus is a nice one for splitting &joining. So is TMPGenc, but only for MPEG.Conversion will require editing programmes like Ulead Video Studio,Pinnacle Studio etc.

a solution to the *shortening* question has already been given - i'd suggested audacity (http://www.google.de/url?sa=U&start=1&si=3&oi=smap&q=http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_windows) as well, as it is a very nice freeware audio editor
concerning the playback *problems* you thought you were having i strongly recommend NOT to change anything at all
all you have to do to play the files created by shrink is using the proper playback tool/routine!
shrink will have created dvd compliant material and you can easily play it from your pc with for example powerdvd or mpc (media player classic)
in powerdvd 6 select: "open dvd files from harddrive" and select your subdirectory where the new data were saved to by shrink
dont convert the material to be able to play it!
