Fun Neverwinter Nights Builds? |
Fr4nk Feb 4th 2006, 5:04pm I got the gold edition (with SoU and HoU) for christmas and want to play as something fun but different. I'm used to playing as a Cleric and Wizard, but want to try something interesting involving all those bright and shiny prestige classes and feats.
So, any ideas/suggestions?
Karamozov Feb 4th 2006, 6:14pm Not sure how well done they are in NWN, but in normal D&D the Shadowdancer is cool as hell in my opinion. I never got around to getting the expansions for NWN so I never found out how well they did. For that, take probably a level of ranger, then lots of rogue and few levels Shadowdancer. That is, if they are working on 3rd ed rules still so the Ranger gets you Two Weapon Fighting for free and all. Lots of Rogue because levels in rogue increase your sneak attack where levels in Shadowdancer don't (though Assassin does, not sure if the assassin is in NWN though).
Maybe roll up a few random chars and then use the cheats to pump them and try out the random cool stuff of some classes. When you find one that is interesting, roll up a new char and actually play through.
Dragannia Feb 5th 2006, 1:16pm The NWN Shadowdancer is fucking annoying! The stealth mode allows it to disappear almost at will, making it impossible to hit.
Namdoolb Feb 5th 2006, 1:58pm You might want to try the arcane archer. You get a decent amount of Arcane spellcasting as a perequisite for entering the class, plus, you get some nice interesting stuff with the bow.
Makes a fairly capable ranged attacker, with good spellcasting abilities. Ranger is an interesting third class to take with this, as it will help out your attack rating and give you a second animal companion. Combine that with your henchmen and a summoned creature, and you've got a veritable army to keep the enemy off you while you fire and cast away to your hearts content from the back.
Captain Hat Feb 5th 2006, 6:08pm Me, I likes my Paladins. You can do some cool stuff with the Champion of Torm prestige class too, if you know what you're doing. Divine Might plus Holy Avenger plus Great Cleave FTW.
Tycho Feb 5th 2006, 6:18pm Definitely arcane archer. My current character will be split with 16 levels in Ranger, 9 levels in Wizard, and the balance in Arcane Archer.
Very good ranged attacks (hit chance and damage-wise), combined with a diverse spellcasting repertoire makes for one hell of a punch. Death Arrow is overrated (low likelyhood to hit tougher creatures), but Imbue Arrow and Seeker Arrow are near irreplaceable.

Plus you never set off a trap (saving throws are amazing)!
dacis2 Feb 5th 2006, 9:32pm I chose Red Dragon Disciple. Sure it kinda sucks, but being a sorcerer and running around bashing people to death with a Greatsword is fun. The AC and STR bonuses really help out there.
When I get home, I'm going to switch to a Bastard Sword and a short sword
Gray Area Feb 6th 2006, 11:18am I know its an old trick, but a level 10 fighter with 30 levels in weapon master works every time. I specilise in sythes :D
Revenant Feb 6th 2006, 11:24am Plus you never set off a trap (saving throws are amazing)!
Sprinkle that in with at least two lvls of monk here and there (for the saves, Evasion, free Cleave, and tumble as a class skill) and you're in good shape. Played Paladin/Monk/Champion of Torm for the HotU campaign and I just *ran* through traps like they didn't exist.

Sword's egde hitting the enemy at relativistic speeds, LOL! :D
Captain Hat Feb 6th 2006, 6:07pm Seriously dude, you walk into a crowd of relatively low-level stuff and hit one of them....Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave and you're standing atop a pile of bodies in less than a round.
Fr4nk Feb 6th 2006, 6:15pm Thanks y'all, I'm definetly going to try out some of the builds here.
Currently I'm using a human fighter/thief/shadowdancer, and it's so much freaking fun! :D Greatsword + str bonus + backstab + insta hide for the win! Also, spring attack and whirlwind attack are a pretty good substitute for the cleave/great cleave combo (no attacks of opportunity for moving, hit/kill everything in the immediate vicinity).
Silver Paladin Feb 7th 2006, 3:37am Rogue/Shadowdancer/Assassin is sick. I haven't played it in like 2 years so I don't remember my exact build, but I was able to pop people for over 100 damage every restealth and kill my way to the top 1 guy at a time.
Rogue for baseclass
Shadowdancer for Hide in Plain Sight, easily one of the top 3 most broken abiliites in the game
Assasin for the HUGE back stab/death attacks.
So the basic combat:
1) Stealth
2) Run in, backstab/death attack for HUGE damage (easily over 100 damage for a single weapon)
3) Run out, Hide in Plain Sight
4) Repeat from step 2.
The best part is you can pick and choose your target and prioritize the ganking to your liking.
Problems? There are some mobs that can't be backstabbed. Those freaking suck. You can still solo them without a henchmen, but it becomes a real pain in the ass. Luckily, they're rare.
Plus having rogue abilities makes your life SO MUCH easier in NWN. I tried playing other classes, but I always ended up multiclassing them to Rogue because of how vital Pick Lock, Detect/Disarm trap, etc. are. Why not start off with a Rogue in the first place? :)
Chuut-Riit Feb 7th 2006, 8:16am Seriously dude, you walk into a crowd of relatively low-level stuff and hit one of them....Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave, Great Cleave and you're standing atop a pile of bodies in less than a round.
You need an Unreal-Tournament-2K3-Announcer mod for such occurences..
Head Shot!
Head Shot!
Multi Kill!
ULTRA KILL!!
M O N S T E R K I L L!!!
WICKED SICK!
HOLY SHIT!
:D
Lancelot D Feb 8th 2006, 1:24am i had a red dragon disciple/druid shapeshifter something or another in the last expansion (yes changing into a dragon is something marvelous)
there is a template fort he above that can be downloaded of the NWN website somewhere - so you can see what you need to do to get there (and just mess around instead of having to create one from scratch)
Dragannia Feb 8th 2006, 3:38am Another good combo is Scythe + Weapons Master + Improved critical. I use a Cleric because of the whole 'Grim Reaper' look ;)
It's totally insane. 16-20, x5 crit, 2 handed so Power Attack stacks. I regularly get over 100-200 damage.

That class combination is, as far as I know, impossible in the NWN game.
Druid can't make the requirements for Red dragon disciple, 'cause only Sorcerers and Bards can do that... And Druid is the only class under NWN rules that can Progress to the Shifer prestige class.
I don't know the Pen & paper version at all really, but I think it's impossible there too.
(although a Sorcerer/Red Dragon Disciple/Shifter should be possible under p&p rules I think)
Anyway... Assuming a Dragon form isn't too hard, and there's two ways you can do it in NWN:
1) Sorcerer or Wizard: Get the spell "Polymorph self" (It's a level 9 spell if I remember correctly).
2) Druid/Shifer: Put ten levels in Druid, and just keep going in Shifer after that. Boost your Wisdom as much as you possibly can. (it needs to be about 28 to get the Feat for dragon shape)
Obviously, the Sorcerer/ Wizard route is easier than the Druid/Shifter route, but the Shifter version does give you slightly better results.
Lancelot D Feb 9th 2006, 12:39am hey it's been a while since i played (over a year now) so excuse me for making a mistake :p
but you are ofcourse correct :)
Gray Area Feb 9th 2006, 3:36am I find the Sorcerer or Wizard route better for being a dragon, mainly because you end up with two.
Dragon Knight + Polymorph self = 2 large red dragons stomping on everything.
Dragannia Feb 9th 2006, 3:38am Too bad you can't use the Red Dragon's breath attack (when you've shapeshifted). Or if you can, I haven't figured it out.
dacis2 Feb 9th 2006, 5:00am What if you're a Red Dragon Disciple at level 10, and you use your sorcerer transmutation (or whatever) spell to shapeshift into a Red Dragon. Can you still use the breath attack?
And what's a good Red Dragon Disciple build?
