Yes, it will work just fine. I use a linksys AP on my router for my ibook at home with no issues.
The modem will connect into the router and then the router will assign ips to each machine on your network. For your ibook just make sure you set up your airport card to be able to connect. Then it should see the router you have installed. It will be called linksys or netgear by default (depending on which one you buy) just make sure you connect to it. There are plenty of security settings which I am not going to get into in this thread, but I am sure you can go through the manual of your router and it will walk you through them.
