I have a mac mini doing specialized work with no network connection. The mini is headless.
I'd like to be able to walk near it with my laptop and connect wirelessly (ssh, vnc) for maintenance. How to best do this?
If I set up the mini to do a computer-to-computer network, then I can connect to that. Problem is, I cannot get the mini to start in this mode when it boots up. The solution needs to handle reboots. Is there an option to create a p2p from boot?
Or should I just have the mini try to connect to a network named 'foo', and then I set up my laptop to generate a p2p network named 'foo' and then the mini will initiate the connection...
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
-k.

Just checked, and the reverse connection requires me to reboot the mini. It appears to only check for networks at boot up, it won't connect if I walk nearby and just sit there. It isn't exactly physically accessible so this isn't a good solution.

I tried to have the mini try to connect to a network named 'foo', and then I set up my laptop to generate a p2p network named 'foo' and then the mini will initiate the connection... but this only works when I reboot the mini, and it is locked in a secure box, so rebooting means pulling the plug, which isn't healthy for the mini.
Any suggestions?

I think the answer to your question is likely to be that you need to create your own StartupItem. The details of doing that in general have been covered in articles on the main macosxhints site (search for: StartupItems) but the specifics of how to start up the computer to computer wireless network via a shell script will be something that you will need to find out on your own or via google etc unless someone here pipes up.
I would say that the best solution would be to avoid rebooting your Mac Mini unless absolutely necessary. That would diminish the problem enough to make it perhaps not worth worrying about.

The only time the mini will reboot is due to power outages. I have no problem making startup items, I've done that plenty of times before. I guess no one knows how to do a CLI activation of P2P, so yes, I'll google for that...

Yep - or a "bump".
Or a more plaintive "Doesn't anybody know?"
