I have finally taken the plunge and bought a 12" ibook to complement the 17",1.8, G5 which always seems to have a queue to get on it (family of 4).
The idea at the moment is to clone the G5 to the ibook, with everybodys accounts, favorites, preferences, itunes etc intact, a mirror image if that is possible. my questions are,
1. Is this a good idea, how do you manage your networked macs around the house, do you let them maintain their own identity ?
2. How would I go about cloning them and maintain the symmetry in future.

System symetry will be more hassle than anything else, IMO. A small server (mac mini?) would be more suited to keeping your two systems on the same page.
So I guess my vote would be Not To Clone. It won't hurt, but they won't remain clones for longer than a few minutes of usage.

I would not clone them. I cloned my PB to a G5, and have seen quite a bit of very odd behavior that is most likely because of this.
What is your definition of "symmetry?" Keep the UI looking the same, or keep data in sync, or ...?? I would simply configure them similarly, then use something like You Synchronize (good, reliable, safe sync utility) to keep the files the same. Or as Elvis said, put in a server and store files there.

To do the initial synch of all items, would the migration assistant that comes up when you first start the new machine not be the best option ? After all it is meant to allow transfer of all the crap from one machine to the other... And afterwards use a Synch utility as suggested to keep things synchronized... And the
Migration assistant is still available after you've started to use the computer in the Utilities folder.
