Resuming Interrupted Append: MAIL

Had a lot of problems with mac mail of late, with the software crashing repeatedly. Often after getting the message resuming interrupted append after booting (mail starts automatically on startup) what is an append. is it a particular one and can i stop it 'resuming'? Often when mail crashes i also get "compaction error, mailbox will be returned to previous state" or something similar...
