Tiger 10.4.5
Software Update prompted me to intall the security update.
So I did.
Now my computer does not work - not even Finder.
 wtf?
This is not the first time an Apple software update has forced me to go back to the Tiger installation dvd.
Anyone else had problems with this?

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:

This forum suggests that this happens often. I would recommend you reinstall the software update from Apple's web site. This can also happen during a security update. I would hope that the moderator updates the trouble shooting guide with this information as a possible solution.

I would hope that the moderator updates the trouble shooting guide with this information as a possible solution.
Note that item #11 on the list in the above linked macosxhints article says:
Reapply the latest combo updater
I think that covers what you are recommending since the combo updaters eventually include the security updates as well. But certainly it doesn't hurt to try reapplying a security update on its own. Sometimes (due to bugs) the updates from Software Update are different than the ones you can download from Apple's web site.

Thanks hayne, It seems that if a problem occurs immediately after a software or security update, it would be wise to reinstall the update from Apple's site first since this is probably the most likely cause of an undesirable behavior. As you mentioned, this can occur because of a bug in the software update program.
If the problem occurs sometime after the update, then it would be wiser to follow the excellent troubleshoothing technique the forum team has put together.
Just my 2 cents
