In an attempt to move Disk Utility to my dock, I think I deleted the app. It is no longer in my applications directory.
I have a new LaCie external hard drive I need to format.
Can I "re-install" the Disk Utility that came with my Mac?

It is likely that you merely moved it to the Desktop or some other location rather than deleted it. Unless of course you moved it to the Trash and then emptied the Trash.
So look around to see if Disk Utility might just have been moved elsewhere.
Note: it is usually under the "Utilities" sub-folder of /Applications, not directly in the /Applications folder.

When I go to terminal and do an "ls" on the /applications/utilities directory, it is gone.

:D I found the application on the install disk and just copied over to my hard drive. Looks like this worked. Thanks....

just a question: If i have an unformatted external hard disk (200gb) is it possible for me to to use disk utility to give it a mac-worthy fat32 format?

Yes, it should be possible. Since it's unformatted and nothing is on it, give it a try. I use it on a smaller external USB drive all the time, works great in both Mac and PC.
