which is better for the hard drive?

empty trash or secure empty trash

I don't think you would actaully hurt the hard drive doing a secure empty, but it does go over the erased files 7 times. So it is technically causing more wear.

It's more about the security, I think.

I am not sure what you are asking...

When using Secure Empty Trash, the file(s) are erased and then written over 7 times by 1's and 0's. Making it harder to recover these files, much harder.

If you're asking which option technically puts less wear and tear on the drive, then you're looking for regular old Empty Trash. All it does is delete the entries for the files in the disk catalog, which is a pretty low-intensity operation.

In practical terms though, you really don't have to worry about over-using a hard drive.
