CD-R burn/verify problem |
andyda 03-16-2006, 02:34 PM I am having difficulties witha batch of CD-R's. The CD-Rs are TDK up to 48x compatible, PrintOn 80 min, 700 MB. I bought a 50 pack from Costco, and I don't think any I have tried so far have verified.
I previously used TDK CD-Rs with the same general characteristics except that they were before the PrintON CD-R became available, and they worked just fine.
I still have some old 650 MB CD-Rs that work just fine, and some CD-RWs that stlll work just fine.
I use an iMac G5 20", with 1 GB RAM, and OS X 10.4.2
Anybody else have problems with this type of disk, or it just the batch I have?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Andy
giskard22 03-16-2006, 03:22 PM Do you have another computer to test with? Or a different brand of media? It could be that your drive has gone bad too. You just need to do some basic elimination testing.

It could be just that these (TDK CD-R Print-On) don't work in your CD-ROM, unless someone with the same iMac uses the same disc with no difficulties.
I have had issues with some discs not working in certain CD-ROMs.
So now, I only buy 2-3 brands of discs, that I know work in all my Computers (Mac and PC).
When I go to test a new brand, I only buy 1-2 disc to try and then later go for the 50 or 100 pak.
But maybe someone else has the same iMac (20" G5) and will post that they can/can't use the same TDK CD-Rs.

Well, I have done some testing...
Also some 700 MD CD-R that also works, maybe it is just the particular media, I was just hoping maybe there was something, maybe a setting that would help with this media, but maybe if a particlualr media doesn't work, there is just nothing that can be done.

I was using TDKs with no problem, in fact that's all I've used since I started burning CDs since using my G3 mini-tower with seperated CD burner, and my iMac G4, and iBook G4, never a problem with TDK until tis batch.
As giskard22 maybe I should try the media in another computer.
BTW: The Drive in the iMac G5 still works fine with old TDK CD-R and CD-RW.
Maybe it is just a bad batch, I'll get another form Costco, give it a try and if they also fail, I'll return them. I have thrown away too many coasters to try to take thes back.
giskard22 and tbsingleton73, Thanks for the ideas and help, it is much appreciated.

andyda 03-17-2006, 01:04 PM AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!
I didn't think about testing on different computers as I could burn something on my iMac G5, but, I just tried the suspect media on my iBook G4 and well, it burned correctly 2 disks in a row. I then tried my iMac G5 again, and no verify, 2 disks in a row (not really a surprise).
The iMac can burn some media, but not the PrintON TDKs, the iBook can burn other media, and the PrintON TDks.
I'm using 10.4.5 on the iBook G4, and 10.4.2 on the iMac G5.
Is there a possibility that the differenced in OS version could be the problem, or is it just the burner on the iMac G5?
Could it be a difference in the CR burner brand between the two computers?
MatshitaDVD-R on the iMac G5 and a
MatshitaCD-RW on the iBook G4
Or, could it be a bad CD burner on the iMac G5?
I know there is some formatting on blank media, could the software or the firmware on the iMac G5 be not reading that formatting correctly?
Thanks again for all the help, it is much appreciated.

trevor 03-17-2006, 01:34 PM Some varieties of dye formulations used on CD-Rs do not work well with some CD-R drives. If you find an incompatibility with one variety of media, just don't buy that specific media for use with that specific drive any more.
So, you've discovered that the dye used on the TDK print-on media does NOT work with your iMac, but it does with your iBook. So, just stop using that media with the iMac. Buy another variety.
The interaction between photo-sensitive dye and the laser that burns holes in it is somewhat complex. You will always have some lasers that just don't work well with some dyes--that's no big surprise.
This has nothing to do with the operating system or even the computer--just the drive and the media.
