Where are all the speed cameras?

Just got back home from a 2700km road trip around the top 2/3rds of the South Island. Didnt see a single roadside speed camera (boot of a car/van type) Are they all hidden inside trees and hedges nowdays or is there a reason for their disappearance? Not complaining at all. Just wondering :)

No, they just don't exist. I know a guy who maintained 140-160km/h all the way from Picton to Dunedin, slowing only in built-up areas. No speeding tickets.

Interesting. Hopefully it means the boys in blue are spending time on more important matters...

Hmm from my experience, there are usually about 3 on the way home to Kerikeri from Auckland.

There are speed cameras in Christchurch they rotate them around the sites as well as a few mobile and hand held types . Guess you were lucky.

One of the most busist ones is in Hornby on State high way one heading south ( between two traffic lights in a 50 k zone)

They are all catching grannies doing 61 in 50 kph areas. Easy prey.

Also no time for the radar detector to detect them.

NZ is too spreadout and the use of radar detectors by high speeders on open roads make them next to useless there.

It is far better to have police cars driving on the roads and unmarked ones at that.

We see very few speed cameras on the open road these days but interestingly enough there are more cop cars around than in the past, marked and unmarked, and they are always busy. We quite often come across them when we least expect them so it doesn't pay to be complacent.

i think they should be geting a few more speed cameras and put them next to every school in the country !

we just about always see cops pulling someone over on just abut every trip inbetween whangerai and auckland. concidering people crash (and often die) around here on a daily basis there obviously not enough cops on the road :(

on the topic of road safty and speeding i see they have removed more passing lanes. not suprising going by the amount of gross speeding done on them and the amount of crashes.

One of the few police cars I saw on the road was near the Salmon Farm north of Twizel on the main road. I caught up with it after someone flashed their lights at me about 20 minutes earlier. The cop was traveling 85kph and not being game to try overtaking it, was stuck behind it for a good 15 minutes. When I signalled to turn off to the salmon farm he/she signalled left and did a u turn to go back the other way... coincidence or not? I drive a turbo Subaru Forester...

Police should also hand out tickets to those people who drive at 80km/h on open road yet refuse to keep left when there is enough room to let other motorist pass.

Oh yeah. Like at 7.30 in the morning during the rush hour when the schools are closed and there are no kids around.

The the tax copllectors were really seriouse about school safety they would paint on the road in larger letters about 100 meters from the school the words "SLOW, SCHOOL" and also have signpost errected idicating the same. All the schools around my area are like hiiden speed cameras . They have no signage what so ever..

As far as I'm concern the Police school safety program, is all about revenue bnot safety..

well around here kids use the school at all hours, they are often playing in on the fields before/after school and in the weekends.
people often go past the schools at 100km/h in a 50 aera :(
if you think speed cameras outside schools is hard just wait till you go to assuie ! ! NZ is very soft on the rules. mind you shouldn't be speeding in the first place, not like its going to gain any decent amount of time.

I read a while back over in Aussie somewhere near Perth I think the cops put up a couple of 30Kph signs on the open road where there was no roadworks and made a fortune for the government.

a bit rough when there is no legit purpose for the signs.

however i have watched a people mover (with kids in the back) do over 120km/h passing a truck through a 50km/h road works, they just missed the cones.
not to mention all the vechiles we have passed us in the middle of road works spraying stones everywhere. later on a cop was sitting in the middle of it with a lazer gun :)

They can. It can be really terrible around some parts of Otago, as you can only pass pretty much at passing lanes..(unless suicidal and there are a few of them though).

they have done, tho they got nasty feedback from many motoring clubs whos members who where ticketed for driving at 80k/h when their vechile dosn't go any faster (camber van) and there was traffic ahead of them as well ! !

also 80km/h isn't that slow, you can't go much faster around here anyway with all traffic, pass one slow vechile and 1 min later your stuck doing 40km/h behind a truck up a hill.

however they should be doing those who drive sports cars at 60/70kmh and driving on the centre line !
