Upscaling question??

I have a denon DHT550 amp/dvd set. I am getting my panny 32LXD52 LCD replaced by the LXD60. I was considering getting the denon 1920 dvd and using HDMI but after reading various reports have concluded that i cant have both dvd and LCD upscaling. Question is, how do i know if the LCD is upscaling? It just outputs to 576p PAL. Surelt that is not upscaling, so i could hook up the denon 1920 via HDMI???

You seem confused your LCD panel has a rs of 1366x768 or similar DVD (PAL) has a res of 720x576 interlaced to show DDVD on your LCD it will scale PAL to native res (1366x768) a 1920 or similar will scale 576i to 720p or 1080i but the LCD will still have to scale to native there may be a benefit in upgrading to a better DVD player but scaling and HDMI will not automatically improve the quality a better DVD player will

Just to add, the LCD panel will scale as close to its native resolution as provided by the DVD player.

Better LCDs displays (@1366x768) are optimised for 1080i HDMi input, as the LCD scalar is optimised to handle the scale down whilst maintaining quality. I found cheapie LCds are ok at SD resolutions, okish at 720p but at 1080i look painfully awful. (BTW- 1080i on the new Sony V series looks amazing)

DVD scaling only seems to be effective in my experience with more expensive DVD players like to Denon 3910, Marantz DV7600 and Pioneer 989. Basically a ?000 LCD will have better inbuilt scaling than a cheap ?00 DVD player.

Cheers,

MP

So how do i get my LCD to scale my dvd to 720p without buying an HDMi equipped dvd player?

Your LCD will do this automatically. You don't need to do anything at all :) . It will do this no matter what input you have, HDMI, component, SCART, S-Video or composite (assuming you have a 1366x768 based LCD).

Right, so basically if my lcd says 576 pal it is upscaling to its native resolution anyway???

I have a similar question regarding this so will ask in here to save starting too many posts about the same thing. I have a Hitachi 42pd9700 and a Samsung 950 connected via HDMI. How can I stop the Samsung from doing the upscaling and get the TV to do it instead, which i theory should do it better than the player ????

Just set the player to the lowest res and the set will scale it to fit the screen, honestly these upscaling players are just a gimmick, all screens scale otherwise the picture of pal stuff wouldn't fit the screen.

I had this player and got best results from lowest res on player feed via HDMI(the theory is that the digital feed it better but some people still think component is more natural and better).

This way the image is only being scaled once and is being feed digitally (is that the right spelling?). And don't be tempted by the expensive HDMI leads, a digital signal is just a series of 1's and 0's, the lead will either work or fail and if it fails it will be miserabley, there is no in between, the one that comes with the sammy is fine.
Hope this helps.
