i was trying to use fink to install xfree86.. this is what i get:

/Users/fink 8-} fink install xfree86
Password:
/usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus is not executable!
Information about 2306 packages read in 4 seconds.
Failed: Can't resolve dependency "gcc3.1" for package "xfree86-4.5.0-14" (no matching packages/versions found)

the is nothing in the path after :

/usr/libexec/gcc/darwin

so.. why isnt something there? how do i fix this? is it a file o dont have because i have not done anything with/in darwin? or did fink put the proper file here when it installed?
so far i cant use fink to update anything without getting this error about 200 times during the install..

It seems like an incorrectly installed fink, but I could be wrong.

There is nothing wrong with installing XFree86, and more power to you if you know that that's what you want. (I used it myself under Jaguar and Puma).

But you, umm, are aware that XFree86 is totally unncessary if you have Apple's own X11 installed, yes? And that Apple's X11 is better integrated with the Aqua environment and is generally a bit faster? And that you don't need to compile it, just install it from the OS installation CD or DVD?

I looked through your posting history, and I can't find where you mention what kind of Mac you have. Is it, by chance, one of the new Intel Macs? The title of your first thread ("permissions already messed up!") seems to suggest you have a new Mac, but that's just a guess.

I realize this sounds like a stupid question, but for some reason, I wonder.

no i have a tiPB 500mhz.. i realise now that x11 is there and have moved on.. thanks for the help though.. im still having problems with this though:

/usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus is not executable!

the xfree86 was more of just an example.. i get the not executable when i try to do almost anything.. like:
fink selfupdate

so.. im really more concerned with a fix for that right now.

/usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus is not executable!

What do you get from the following command? (Copy & paste the result back here so we can see):

ls -l /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus

This is what I get on my 10.4.6 system with version 2.2.1 of Xcode Tools installed:

% ls -l /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 9178116 Oct 31 17:32 /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus

And I see (from the contents of /Library/Receipts) that that file was installed as part of the gcc3.3.pkg

What version of the Xcode Tools do you have installed?

You definitely need to have Xcode Tools installed if you want to do anything with Fink that involves compiling from source. See the "open source software" section of this Unix FAQ (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=40648)

I actually thought Fink required the dev tools for everything. Didn't it at one point perform a check for that at install? Am I completely losing it?

xcode 1.5 looks like it was the version for 10.3.9. now all i have to do is find that!

I think the last XCode version for Panther (10.3) was Xcode 1.5
You can get it from the Apple developer site (after registering, as mentioned in the FAQ I pointed to above).
But you should also have received some version (I forget which) of Xcode with your Panther disks.

Log into your ADC account via connect.apple.com and navigate to the downloads section. It's just a little more than halfway dow the "Developer Tools" section.

Edit: Beaten!

Mikey-San: Fink has never installed devtools, and one can use the binary point releases without ever installing them. Fink can't fully supply them itself, because Apple's license forbids redistribution. At most itcould (and some versions sometimes do) tell you where to download them yourself instead of just crashing with a cryptic "cannot find compiler" type of error message. At various times, fink has supplied certain limited gcc compilers, but these have always still required apple's devtools as a back end. The very latest fink will complain if devtools are not installed the moment you try to selfupdate to a source release, but I think that version of fink is only present in source releases yet, so those who need it don't get it yet.

I didn't say that Fink installed the dev tools; I said that I thought it checked for them during install. That's all.
