navigating to /Volumes (Help with Ditto)

Hi Everyone,

I was trying to learn how to use the ditto command in the hope that it would allow me to back up my iPod. I have a LaCie external disk and created a folder on it called ipod to place my backup files in. I ran the command...

ditto -V -rsrc /Volumes/ipod/movies "/Volumes/LaCie/ipod"

However, duh, I got the name of my external wrong, it is actually called Lacie Disk. It went ahead and seemed to be copying files and has taken about 3GB of my internal disk and I would like to remove them from this.

Could someone shed some light how to navigate to these files in terminal and erase them?

Many thanks,

Jonny

To learn how to navigate to folders using commands in Terminal, see this Unix FAQ (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=40648)

But you don't need to use Terminal for this. To get to the /Volumes folder in Finder, use "Go to Folder" from the "Go" menu and then type in:
/Volumes
in the dialog that comes up. You will see the contents of the /Volumes folder and can trash the "LaCie" folder from there.
If you want to be absolutely sure that you aren't accidentally affecting your external disk while doing this, unmount it first.

Thanks so much for that... It's making a lot more sense now.

If I wanted to make a backup of my entire ipod, MS-DOS formatted and labelled "IPOD" to my external drive HFS+ and labelled "Lacie Disk" and a directory named "ipod" using ditto am I right in assuming the command is

ditto -V -rsrc /Volumes/IPOD /Volumes/"LaCie Disk"/ipod

Could I then restore my ipod to factory and reverse the ditto command?

Also could I use the ditto command also to "clone" my internal drive as a backup in much the same way?

Many thanks again and great forum by the way.

I'd be very careful about doing that sort of thing to your iPod or you might (if it doesn't work) loose the ability to play music on it.
Best to stick to Apple's iPod utilities.

Cloning a disk will need more than just 'ditto' if you want it to be bootable.
See the discussion in a document (under the Advanced menu I think)on the Carbon Copy Cloner site about what needs to be done.
But you'd be best to just use Carbon Copy Cloner (google to find it)
