any cons to the part-time programs?

Hello,

I am deciding between a part-time and full-time program. I am especially interested in the part-time programs of USC and UCLA since their part-time programs are known to be as top notch as their full-time program. Since the part-time programs at these schools have been known to be just as top quality as their full-time MBA programs, the question I have is where else does the part-time program lack in comparison to the full-time? It appears as if the only difference is that the part-time program is spanned across 3 years instead of 2 years, but is there anything else that it lacks from the full-time such as opportunities?

I wanted to know the pros and cons of such top quality part-time programs. I understand that part-time mba students can work while attending school so they will not be in as much debt, if any at all, yet I also know that it is less easy for part-time mba students to network with their mba peers and focus on the curriculum while at a part-time program. But are there any other significant cons or pros of these part-time programs, especially if their quality is as good as full-time ones?

Also, do top MBA job recruiters look at part-time programs less than full-time programs or are students from both programs exposed to the same exact opportunities? For example, are the same top notch jobs available to both part-time MBA students and full-time MBA students, or are part-timers only recruited by certain recruiters? If so, what companies would not want to recruit part-time mbas, and why not?

Also, in regards to the application, do part-time MBA admissions committees weigh certain things more than the full-time MBA admission committees? I understand that part-time MBA admissions committees probably expect more work experience and less stellar academics, but anything else more in particular compared to full-time applicants?

Thanks

NDJ

Hi,
I am applying at the Langone part-time MBA program at NYU Stern which is also considered to be pretty top notch. While the program requires all students to be working while in the program the only con that I see is the there is no on-campus interviews for this program sice participants are already expected to be working. However the career service is definitely avialble and I dont believe networking in any way is hampered.

Dear Newdellyjelly,

You appear to have a very solid grasp on the difference between a part-time and a full-time MBA program. Here are some additional differences you might not have considered:

In addition to not having as much time to network with their peers, PT MBA students will not have as much time to focus on their coursework, attend conferences and workshops, or participate in extracurricular activities, as they will be working full-time while attending school.

PT programs tend to be much more suitable for career accelerators than for career changers because of the lack of an internship. The summer internship often provides the best opportunity for a career changer to show that they are skilled in the area they are looking to join and to build some connections that will be useful in their job search. Career accelerators, on the other hand, already have relevant experience and probably have a network already established.

Otherwise, your observations have been very apt, and I think that you have focused well on the relevant differences between these two types of programs.
